Is there a single Warhammer novel worth reading?
>>
>>24915163
It's usually a pretty shit universe, but for a bit of fun I will sometimes indulge in the books that have ork-heavy plots. There's one called "Brutal Kunnin" that is actually from the ork's point of view for the entire story, and it's pretty cool. There's another series called "The Beast Rises" and the orks are pretty fucking brutal in that one too. I find most of the stories that focus on the Imperium of Man to be pretty gay.
>>
>>24915163
The 1993 Space Marine one was pretty fun
>>

peter fehervari is the closest thing to literary fiction you’re going to get from black library slop. in fact i find his work an interesting experiment to take something as lowbrow as 40k genre trash and attempt to elevate it to something of actual literary value. complex metatextuality and recursivity that rewards rereads, quite an achievement considering the knuckledragging target audience
>>
>>24915163
Necropolis and Traitor General
>>
>>24915163
The only ones worth anything are the Last Chancers novels, and of those really only the first one.

This want to read this one because I like these space mummies (they are easy to paint.)
I'm currently reading this anthology about grots. It's... fine? At least it's better than reading about generic big dude #5283638 with daddy issues.

Yes.

Which book

I'm reading the Eisenhorn Omnibus and its pretty good

the plot is a play on roadside picnic/stalker, and concerns a space marine chapter obsessed with collecting works of art.

gonna sounds retarded but what's a good into for warhammer? not 40k and not the board game for nerds. there has to be a book that isn't complete shit or something for this.
black library suggests these for age of sigmar but are they any good?
>>
>>24916203
Start with the Gotrek & Felix books
>>
>>24916203
Just read the books in chronological order? Also, dude it's a TTRPG setting, you'll miss stuff if you don't read the lore from the core books.
>>
>>24915163
I don't know but the only thing I'm familiar with about this setting is the Rogue Trader video game. That's basically a book.

Enjoyed Gaunt's Ghosts, but the series tends to lose quality the further on it gets, being from a destroyed planet, they can't get Tanith to replace main characters to the same vibe as those they've lost.

I'm not sure there will be any left to found a new home.
>>
>>24915163
Divine and the Infinite.
tl;dr It's about two necron lords competing over millennia to acquire a puzzle box. The ending is kind of shit though.
>>
>>24916203
If you want to read, go ahead. But i've heard from multiple people that the books are horrible.
There are plenty of videos on Youtube explaining battles/lore I like to listen to as background audio

I enjoyed the Eisenhorn Omnibus.
I also just finished Dropsite Massacre and really enjoyed it, although I'd only recommend it after reading some of the other relevant Horus Heresy books first
>>
>>24917268
The battle scenes were tedious as fuck, but the banter, endless backstabbing and necron bitching was fun.
>>
le fart... of a leviathan

anyway, no. they have a roster of authors of which fa/tg/uys will exalt some as better but even their best are genuinely unreadable. it's not enjoyable slop, just trite and shitty. i like the (older) 40k universe but the setting does better visually and in isolated paragraphs
>>
>>24915163
The entire canon of Left-Wing literature combined will teach you less about the human condition than Hammer of Olympia.
>>
I started Horus Rising. It is awesome.

The HH novels were carried by the civilizational tragedy of the horus heresy and humanity coming so very close to building the space utopia and being dragged back into the dark ages by the same religion it sought to wipe out.

take that away and the remaining stuff is a literary equivalent of professional wrestler backstories and beefs where the author mashes the cool action figurines Games Workshop wants to sell that week in some cool and ebic action scenes. Best you can hope for is the novel being funny like picrel
>>

im enjoying horus rising as my first warhammer book, would recommend

Considering there are hundreds (?) of these novels and many of them are allegedly bad, why don't (you) the /lit/ writer take the reigns? What does it take to be a warhammer author anyways? I've never heard of these guys doing anything else.
>>
>>24919685
>what does it take to be a warhammer author anyways
You write a 500 word piece of flash fiction set in the WH universe during their yearly open submission periods
>I've never heard of these guys doing anything else.
They usually work (the better) authors to the bone, it's not uncommon for them to publish multiple novels in a single year. Guy Haley is the only one I know with a career outside 40k
>>
>>24920135
Dan Abnett also has a career, albeit mostly comics and capeshit.

Which battle brother is stepping up to join these authors? They speak of craft, not slop.

Rob Young – Longshot and Leontus: Lord Solar: I would write a moment of high tension or conflict between the two characters, where something ominous is happening that hints at a larger story. This way you leave the reader wanting more! We want to hear about epic characters doing epic things, not just sitting around discussing the weather on Caliban.

Jonathan D Beer – King of the Spoil and Dominion Genesis: A really strong opening line is key. You’ll want to grab the editors’ attention and pose a question or create a conflict that will be addressed throughout the scene. Also, don’t get hung up on the idea of these being miniatures – these are characters with their own motivations and flaws. Make sure to choose a pair of characters which will naturally generate conflict!

Denny Flowers – Outgunned and Above and Beyond: Don’t feel like you have to start at the beginning. 500 words isn’t a lot, so start where your scene gets interesting and write the best possible interaction between the characters you can think of. I wouldn’t necessarily pick the two biggest, most powerful characters in the setting, but lower agency characters with thematic links who would be more likely to interact. I didn’t succeed on my first try, so don’t be downhearted if you don’t get through this time – just keep trying!

Robert Rath – The Infinite and the Divine and Fall of Cadia: Remember that dialogue is a highly efficient storytelling tool, since even when a character is talking about someone or something else, you’re simultaneously learning about the character who’s speaking. You only have 500 words, so make every one count! Also don’t be afraid to write more than 500 and cut it down to the best ones. My original writing sample for Open Submissions was 750 words long, then I went in and cut every line that wasn’t a killer, leaving me with a stronger and more characterful sample.

just read the old Warhammer fantasy army books. Or gotrek and felix. Dont ever bother with anything in "Age of Sigmar"
>>
I still don't know what Age of Sigmar is supposed to be about. Is he the Emperor but in a parallel universe or something
>>
>>24915163

The All Guardsmen Party is great!

This is the best summary and “bolter porn”. Pew pew, boom, evil guys go splat. I love ‘sploshions.

age of of sigmar is the sequel to the old Warhammer fantasy setting. Sigmar was the original founder of the empire in warhammer fantasy and he was worshiped as a god by the citizens after his rule. In the narrative cancer that was "the end times" made him come back as a god when the world exploded and he made a whole new setting with his god powers. If for whatever reason you're interested in this 1d6chan can give you the rundown
>>
>>24923461
Sounds kinda gay. I guess they really wanted to reset the setting (to sell news toys, I assume)

Traitor EC always bored me. Loved every second of this audiobook. Has some excellent perspectives through the eyes of three traitor Emperor's Children.

The characterization of both the EC and the Sons of Horus are some of the best either have received. The end of the book is genuinely fantastic and gives good insight on the mind of Eidolon as a traitor.

And if you're into audiobooks... Toby Longworth narrates it and does a stunning job.

>I guess they really wanted to reset the setting
The old setting was very much a classic fantasy trope world meaning that in theory any company could make models for knights, elves, orcs, zombies, etc... that could be used in the game. That was an issue because GW loves money too much to lose a few customers to proxy models that were much cheaper. not only that but names like "high elves" and "orcs" were unable to be locked down under copyright. This coupled with the fact that the human factions were very euro centric and lacking that sweet diversity led gw to start over with a new IP sequel setting as a fresh start to make new models, lore, and factions (the first thing they added was a fantasy version of space marines). The old setting was much more grounded compared to the whacky shit they have in age of sigmar. As you can guess the fanbase outright rejected the change and were promptly replaced with 40k players

>As you can guess the fanbase outright rejected the change and were promptly replaced with 40k players

So nothing of value was lost for GW then?

I liked the Traitor books, and the Night Lords trilogy are fun.

Ciaphas Cain is also fun, and most ork/necron ones are good too.
>>
>>24922864
Yep! It's a really long one though. Probably on par with some novellas.
