It's not a retelling of the bible though, it's just got a lot of Christian imagery in it. The thing you have to understand to really "get" Evangelion is that Anno hates you. He was in a really bad place in his life when he wrote the story, and he hates how popular it became and the fact that people watch his semi-autobiographical account of his spiritual and psychic pain for fun. He hates people asking him stupid questions like "what was it about?" or "what do all the crosses symbolize?" and he hates people asking him to do more of it. He response to that interviewer was a "fuck you", the same way that Reboot is a "fuck you" to an audience demanding more of a finished story.
