I marathoned the first 80 pages last night and I don't know how I feel about it. The writing is obviously very good but>le wacky toilet bowl scene>his batman Corporal Wayne>Joaquin Stick>le banana song >le giant adenoid >le magical boner subplotI wasn't confused at all at any point but I feel like I'm reading a 700 page Reddit post. Does the wackiness die away or do you just settle into it? I enjoy it so far other than cringing at the faggotry that pops up every few pages. I'm wondering how anyone else here dealt with Pynchon's Redditness to get through this.
>>24923242>I wasn't confused at all at any pointImagine trying to impress /lit/ with lies
>>24923242>magical boner subplotThis ain’t a subplot, in fact it’s probably the most vital plot thread you mentioned. Protip: pay attention whenever they mention impolex-G or reverse Pavlovian conditioning
Oh, no, the surreal and comedic stuff is there throughout the book. But make no mistake, it gets quite dark at points. Like, real Salo shit.
>>24923242Get to the second part and the start of the third and only then you can judge the book methinks. Beyond the Zero is the setup, not even the main plot is set up yet and the deeper ideas of the books are not yet well formed as Pynchon was shaping it up.
Is there an author like Pynchon that isn't a schizoid coprophiliac?
>>24924883Haven't read him, but DeLillo is mentioned in this. Just read the bigs: Gaddis, Wallace, Barth, Bolano, DeLillo, Gass, maaaayyyybe Franzen (he's more approachable and mainstream).
>>24924779Salo, the film, was insanely boring and shallow compared to the degeneracy kino that is the book
>>24923242Pynch's slop fucking sucks to be quite honest. I just finished The Crying of Lot 49 and it was complete nonsense. If this is the best living mutt author, then I would hate to see their worst.
>>24924898Correddit used to be their big author, people genuinely thought>and they rode into the billowing sands slaying mexispics and drinking their blood and scalping the natives and and and andWas both amazing writing and somehow biblical
>>24924883His genre is post modernism, they're all schizophrenics. I don't know, try Alasdair Gray.
>>24924898>I just finished The Crying of Lot 49 and it was complete nonsense. What about it confused you?
>>24924910There's nothing "confusing" about it, it's just a bunch of non sequiturs involving whacky characters
>>24923242>his batman Corporal WayneWhat's wrong with this?
>>2492324280 pages in one night? Jesus...If anything it reads more like a collection of 4chan posts, mostly shitposts with a few nuggets of lucidity
>>24925040I want to get invested in a story, not pulled out every other page with a wink wink nudge heh get that reference pal? nonsense
>>24924983Filtered lol
>>24924700It’s true. I previously read the first 50 pages and dropped it so that may have helped but I was genuinely never confused or lost at any single line. The fist 80 pages are incredibly straightforward if you pay attention.
>>24925256But that is the story
>>24924898>If this is the best living mutt author, then I would hate to see their worst. No one involved in real academic literary studies in America rates him anymore. It's mostly on here and reddit he's still memed.
