What is the worst adaption you have ever seen?

The movie has almost nothing to do with Jones' book. Instead of being about a literally a 1980's Welsh wannabee punk rocker loser wizard trying to escape his ex and hold on to his humanity after he sold his soul for power, a pathetic figure to be pitied who needs to grow as a character due to the influence of Sophie, who herself is a weak person forced to become strong and independent

the movie is instead a thirst trap anime tumblr bad guy and about how Victorian era warfare was bad. again.

I don't hate the movie, but I hate is as an adaption of my favourite author's most famous work

Has Miyazaki ever discussed his love of planes, and more specifically, agile dogfighting planes qua the product of the war machine he seems to rail against in a lot of Ghibli movies? Porco Rosso comes to mind

I know I'm not the first to point this out, but surely some anon out there knows more on the topic than I do

maybe he just likes planes
>>
>>24926771
Yes, he's discussed that a whole bunch in interviews. He just grants it's a conflict in his soul between for war and boyish wonder at warplanes.
>>
>>24926830
I can understand that. As someone who deeply loves history, I have a constant conflict between admiration for great empires and the knowledge of the unspeakable evils they committed for personal gain. Was Caesar interesting and brillant? Yes, but I doubt the potential 2/3rds of Gaul that he killed or enslaved in his conquests, would agree it was all worth it.

In the same vein, the instruments of war are objectively interesting. I grew up around guns my whole life, and even people who claim to be staunchly anti-gun, will usually jump at the opportunity to be taken shooting, especially if it's something that seems more destructive, like an AR-15 or an AK-47.

But that's exactly what the movie's about.

kek. the elf was top tier casting. unfortunate.

you don't like the black Russian man?

Or throwing out the whole sexism thing by gender swapping Root?

The book would result in an M rating if faithfully adapted, but there was no excuse for this shit

>>24926943
you haven't read the book. He's so much more pathetic in the book, as in a bad person. Not evil, but bad at being an adult.
>>
>>24926741
The movie was at least fun. Earthsea, on the other hand...

How about this video game adaption of Foundation?

>>24926741
Most Kobo Abe adaptations are better than his actual books. Face of Another for example reads like some weirdo's garage project diary for 2/3s of it before it gets even slightly interesting.

The Wind Rises is a film entirely about this internal conflict.

Fuckin slop if I ever saw it. Can't even "act" like the bitch is piloting it. Like she's lookin out a geriatric ward window as the world flies by and she's left behind confused.

Children of Men!
It was NOTHING like the book!
(it was far better. Important as a film actually. Never read the book)

Pic related was my favourite book as a kid. Then some Americans got hold of the film rights. The result was an utter travesty.

The Disney dub isn't faithful to the spoken Japanese. Miyazaki's film diverges from the book a lot on the surface but actually keeps true to the spirit of DWJ's work as a cute little fable about the reciprocal nature of love as represented allegorically in the mobius strip of the plot.
>>
>>24926741
I was never a big fan of movie even as a Miyazaki one. Definitely felt like one of his weaker films.

>The Disney dub isn't faithful to the spoken Japanese.
That's true of them in general. They're thought of as "higher quality" dubs compared to the absolute slop that is the typical English anime voice over, but they're often extremely divergent from the script and tone of the originals. Spirited Away basically has a completely different 'plot' from Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi due to all the meddling, all the characters have essentially different motivations and plenty of themes and subplots are lost almost entirely or made oddly confusing.

It's a damn shame the level of cultural understanding that has been lost due to western rewrites of Japanese works. On nyaa dot si there's an uploader called hydes who has put up fresh translations of the first four Miyazaki films matched with the best video/audio sources for each, I wish they'd get around to doing the rest because it's sorely needed. They've done releases for some other anime classics too like Akira and Innocence, really artful works when you get into it. I've recently completed a new translation of Mishima: A Life In Four Chapters myself and it's amazing how much is warped or missed out of the official translation.

Yeah, it's not a bad movie, but it's weird if you were expecting the book. Chrestomanci is probably better known than Howl, I'd think, at least before the movie. For me it's Ghost World, a moving portrait of 2 teenage friends growing apart turned into a quirky sex comedy with Steve Buscemi.
