Just finished pic related. Really well done but I'm a little lost as to the connection between the two timelines. Vollmann himself says the rifles had no connection to the 1990s storyline so I'm wondering what connection he saw otherwise.
Are the rifles meant to be symbolic (phallic for the 90s timeline)? The timelines mirror each other; Franklin came to the Natives with (seemingly) good intentions until ignoring or disrespecting them/their culture and Subzero does the same, not to mention the relocation having the same 'good intention' at first glance so maybe that's it?

So did he make that shit up or not because seducing an Alaskan Native drug addict is a fucking insane thing to admit to if it's true

I have no idea but I somehow don't doubt it. The self insert aspect didn't click entirely for me. The Isachsen excursion seemed an odd detour to the story, though I guess it relates to Franklin and his party surviving on the ice

You have no experience with Indian reservations and towns/cities located near them.

Vollman literally talked about in interviews how he would hire prostitutes and masturbate in front of them so he could mine them for material, and that he dresses and acted like a woman for over a month to better understand women and trannies for his writing, but then felt plagued by resentment from his alter ego for being a man
