If God is all that, why is the devil always the most interesting character in any work where he appears?>woland in master and margarita>henry wotton in picture of dorian gray>judge holden in blood meridian>himself in paradise lost>mephistophles in faust>even satan in the bible
>>24930382You're conflating "most interesting" with "most troublesome." Troublesome things reuire more attention than things that aren't.
>>24930390No, when I say interesting, I mean interesting. Even in the bible, it's a toss-up between whether Jesus or Satan is the most interesting character.
>>24930382Are we not sure we find the devil more interesting because we are shallow in some manner.Or because we are afraid that our interest will hurt you.The devil is straightfoward in its interest and people tend not to care if they offend him.
>>24930398Jesus is the most interesting character in the Bible and after him it's Solomon. Satan barely makes any appearances so unless you're one of his jewish worshippers, I don't see how he's all that interesting.
>>24930382Because you are evil and/or, worse, a woman.
>>24930382Because in most christian thought, the problem of evil is a very heavy problem looming over the whole mode of moral-religious thought. God, or the Good, is self-explanatory, the good is good because it is good. The devil is not: why would the devil break away from the Good? and why would the Good allow it?. Every depiction of the devil is a depiction of that contradiction, and so his deeds, motivations, psychology, etc. all contains hints to why the devil does what he does, hints to the mystery of why there is evil at all.
