I'm contemplating committing suicide, and I want to read works whose primary theme is suicide. I already have an idea formulated for how I want to die. Books from any time period and genre (minus psych self-help) are acceptable.Inb4:>Phaedo

yo, instead of committing suicide can you just dedicate your life and hours to me. work a job, funnel the money to me. can provide substandard housing if you need it. we might be able to find others who'll do it to. we get enough, i may grow quite wealthy, and can be a king to you guys. think about it.
>>24933366as an impartial bystander i think its better for everyone you kill yourself.
>>24933367im good, but i could be better if he worked on my behalf
lmao you think you can EVER get off this ride? time flow is circular, youre here for ever bro. that light at the end of the tunnel? thats you being born into the exact same life you're living right now.just lmao
>>24933370best option for all parties would probably be you kys and he stays alive.
>>24933377this guy knows all the secrets and is giving it out .. for free!
>>24933196I don't judge you anon. I believe that in all likelihood I'll die either by suicide or heart disease before I'm 60 which makes me very sad but that's just how I see things panning out.I'll recommend the following:>The Dream of a Ridiculous Man by Fyodor Dostoyevsky>Suicide by Edouard Leve>Pan by Knut Hamsun>Morphine by Mikhail BulgakovAlso here's a lit suicide quote I like>Suicide is what Hemingway does when the world gets so out of focus he can no longer commit it to paper- Frederick ExleyI definitely don't think you should commit suicide but I understand why you want to. This is our burden. Good luck out there.
>>24933377maybe he just wants to respec

>>24933419good advice desuor just do drugs or something, opiates are nice.theres no reason to kys unless you are indian or something, then i get it
>>24933465I work a job, I can't function doing drugs.>>24933377I will get off of this ride (this life), and onto another more amusing and enamoring one (another life, or something else).>>24933366This would be interesting, lol.
>>24933419I'm done coping with vidya, and I will never be a woman, so why bother living a lie?
>>24933392Thank you, anon :`)
>>24933363i feel an incredible joy enter my body when for an instant people collectively forget about marat's status as a martyr in this painting and instead reduce it and by extension him to niche album cover man. the same schadenfreude that i get when i see dark academia bitches use authors i personally dislike, camus and dostoslopsky for example, as aesthetic components.
>>24933196Werther
I recommend Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse.
Fuck Marat, one of the most perfidous personalities in history. Charlotte Corday is probably the most based woman ever.
>>24933196The moral problem of suicide - Paul-Louis Landsberg
>>24933196John Donne, BiathanatosJean Améry, On SuicideSimon Critchley, Notes on Suicide
>>24933196The absolute best on feeling suicidal and miserable. But then for the practical end of dying to the passions instead of merely physically dying, see Saint Isaac of Nineveh's Ascetical Homilies and Saint John Climacus's Ladder of Divine Ascent. Reread the Phaedo too!
>>24934322It will never get better and you can’t escape (suicide won’t relieve you; on the other side is even more suffering). Your only shot is to embrace it, embrace everything. I mean I get the sentiment, but no one has the right to abandon the post and to throw away the cards that one has been dealt. So soldier on, pick up your cross, because it will not carry itself.
>>24934492I second this. The consolation is probably one of the best lifesavers out there
>>24933196>I already have an idea formulated for how I want to dieDramatic bitch
>>24933196Philosophy of Redemption by Mainländer if you want a philosophical take.
>>24934474That essay was awful. Most people commit suicide because they have a mental illness, not because they failed to "bear the cross"
>>24934629Nah man we just falsely label failure to bear the cross as a mental illness for the most part. BPD being the most glaring example. Only (heavily traumatized) schizo’s get a real pass imo, but that’s a tiny minority of ‘mentally ill people’ today.
>>24934633You've clearly never suffered from clinical depression in your life, otherwise you wouldn't say something so stupid.
Robert Burton's The Anatomy of Melancholy was John Keat's favourite book. Studying depression and reducing it down to a humour has really helped me. I realised being scared of studying depression will hinder you intellectually and won't provide the tools to help others with depression. But I have no clue since I'm not clinically depressed.
>>24933377based Samsaranon>>24933196it's obligatory but Myth of Sispyhus. that shit made me want to never die, as long as I can help it.
>>24933196Obvious answer is Biathanatos by John Donne and On Suicide by Thomas De Quincey. Maybe add Bataille and Mishima if you're interested in the aesthetics of suicide. As far as literature portraying suicide there's of course an endless amount of classics, like Ajax, Antony and Cleopatra, Tristan und Isolde, Il trionfo della morte, Patriotism, etc.
I stopped contemplating suicide. Not only have I firmly decided to go through with it I also know the exact way and requirements for me to do so.I will allow myself to end this world after I have a steady career, paid off mortgage, am married with wife and kids and my elderly mom passed away.
>>24934720Good plan desu, just don't be a selfish cunt and do the family annihilation thing.Who knows, maybe in the process you'll get so busy living that you forget to die.
>>24933196Persuasion and Rhetoric is the final boss of suicide literature, it's literally a university thesis ending in suicide>Carlo Michelstaedter (1887-1910) committed suicide at the age of 23, days after completing this devastating treatise on the human condition and the course of Western civilization. This work was deemed to be so radically nihilistic, or so radically idealistic, that publishers shied away from it for decades.

>Apart from the commands of religion, the question may well be asked, Why is it more worthy for an old man who feels his powers decline, to await his slow exhaustion and extinction than with full consciousness to set a limit to his life? Suicide in this case is a perfectly natural, obvious action, which should justly arouse respect as a triumph of reason, and did arouse it in those times when the heads of Greek philosophy and the sturdiest patriots used to seek death through suicide.>Now for ever man has the casket of happiness in his house and thinks he holds a great treasure; it is at his disposal, he stretches out his hand for it whenever he desires; for he does not know the box which Pandora brought was the casket of evil, and he believes the ill which remains within to be the greatest blessing,—it is hope. Zeus did not wish man, however much he might be tormented by the other evils, to fling away his life, but to go on letting himself be tormented again and again. Therefore he gives man hope,—in reality it is the worst of all evils, because it prolongs the torments of man.> The thought of suicide is a great consolation: by means of it one gets successfully through many a bad night. >The Prevention of Suicide.—There is a certain right by which we may deprive a man of life, but none by which we may deprive him of death; this is mere cruelty.
The painting in the OP depicts a political assassination, the murder of Jean-Paul Marat by one Charlotte Corday. There's a beautiful reproduction of this very painting in the Louvre. Just FYI for anyone interested. Any reading of Nietzsche or Camus should set you on a life-affirming path. There are too many good books to read, people to meet, places to see, things to do. One lifetime is not enough, no need on cutting it short.

>>24933392>Suicide by Edouard Levemy aunt asked me what i wanted for christmas & i said this for some reason
>>24934684>reducing it down to a humour has really helped meSo the funniest people are just secretly depressed and suicidal?
>>24937572Anon is likely referring to the humoral theory of bodies, where melancholy is melan (dark) and chole (bile). There's sanguine people (ruled by blood humours), choleric people (ruled by yellow bile), melancholic people (ruled by black bile), and phlegmatic people (ruled by phlegm). Most people have some imbalance of those four humours which makes them more prone to certain mood states and diseases in the theory. Trying to get your humours in balance or less out of balance is the goal of medical treatment, so you see thinks like give heat to people who have a cold (phlegm), but also give hot food to someone who is overly calm, but put someone in a cold bath if they are beefy red in the face from over eating (sanguine) or if they are manic (also sanguine)
>>24936093I know the painting is not of a suicide, I just consider it the artistic ideal of a perfect, beautiful, death.
