This was so ass. The "supernatural" stuff was embarrassing. This is the last time I let /lit/ meme me into reading garbage.

GR gets really fucking dark, without the goofy shit it would be very hard hard to read.

GR is as dark as Pynchon gets, you get bombings and rapes every other chapter, I get what you mean but if you don't like it, you'll probably hate the rest of his books.
>>
im enjoying it so far

I've got about forty pages left and I will admit I'm a bit disappointed.
Every chapter feels like it's setting something up for a massive sprawling adventure like M&D but there clearly isn't time for a payoff. The common Pynch criticism of very thin characters just briefly breezing through is usually fun to me but he inserted enough into this book for one five times its length. Every other fucking page there's a new literal who that's almost completely interchangeable with several others (I think I counted five or six scrappy young street kid sidekicks with no tangible differences).
The protagonist barely exists and hasn't fucking done anything. You get the glimpse at his previous strikebreaking job but for the entire present storyline he just gets moved around by other people and goes "Mmm... Things are getting difficult, toots... I got a bad feeling about what's gonna happen later. I don't wanna go to the next place everybody's telling me I have to go." And then somebody takes him to the next place, again, and he just mopes around it, again, and then somebody says "Oh Hicks you're gonna hate the next place we tell you you have to go."
It feels like if you fed IV to an AI and told it to remake it in the 30s, you'd get exactly this. There just doesn't seem to be a point to any of it.

the protagonist almost completely drops out in the back half of the book it's incredible.

And yes, now that I've finished it, I'd say my least favorite piece from Pynchon.
The book is billed as a madcap journey through central Europe but nobody even leaves the Midwest until almost two-thirds of the way through. He's still able to write the occasional scene that makes your hair stand up but there's no actual mystery behind it all this time, everything just deflates.
My gut reaction is to worry about his health. It feels like he had some ideas for a book then got sick or fucking died before he could bring them to completion.

The guy is 88 years old.

Only thing in the entire book that was cringe was the "Jew-jitsu" bit but I'll forgive Pinecone this small faux-pas.
>>
>>24941709
Well that explains Pynchon's body of work but he was asking about Nazis.
>>
>>24943227
What has Pynchon ever done to you, man?
>>
>>24941520
There would never be a Nazi Pynchon because the Nazis believed true art is sacred and timeless.
