I've seen some discussion about low male readership of fiction. It has apparently been on the decline since 1968 and shrinking. There's a lot of weird ideas floating around for why this is, but I think it's mainly,1) The decline of the short story. I think male readers prefer the short story format, and there's a pretty good correlation between the decline of the short story format and male readership.2) The "rules of writing" in fiction are slanted towards a female readership. Men generally like to read about the thing itself, women generally like to read character dramas. For instance, if you had a story about astronauts discovering an alien spaceship, men would be more interested in the story of the discovery of the alien spaceship itself, while women would be more interested on how discovering an alien spaceship made the crew of astronauts feel and how it affected their interpersonal relationships. Modern writing standards, both taught in schools and creative writing groups favor the latter over the former. For instance, exposition is bad, but complicated characters are good. There's tons of old literature with primarily male audiences that would be considered bad writing by today's standards because it focuses on the thing itself instead of creating some kind of character drama. Classic sci-fi is a good example.
I just read Jurassic Park (saw the movie as a kid) and it's basically just a string of problems for the characters to solve while the chaos theorists repeats "I told you so". Nobody changes during the course of the story. Even the characters who turned out to be wrong refuse to admit that they were wrong.
>>24934820>Why men don't read fictionTHEY DO. The stats from the publishing industry are BULLSHIT. Men PIRATE epubs instead of PAYING for physical books because we don't use them as house decoration.>https://archive.ph/20250718134809/https://www.vox.com/culture/392971/men-reading-fiction-statistics-fact-checked#selection-919.82-919.269>Overall, we’re looking at pretty consistent stats over the course of the last decade: Roughly 70-ish percent of men read at least one book a year, and roughly 80-ish percent of women do.>A difference of 10 percentage points and six minutes, respectively, are probably not enough to power a series of think pieces about how men’s refusal to read is a national crisis.>A 2017 survey by the National Endowment for the Arts found that while 42 percent of US adults had read a novel or short story in the past year, the numbers broke down to 50 percent of women and 33 percent of men. It's a lot less skewed than people make it out to be. I think this fake crisis was caused by women being so excited that they are finally winning in a historically male field that they went balls to the wall gloating about it, albeit in a roundabout way and masked as concern.
Why OPs don't suck dick
>>24934890I’m not sure whether this is true. I can count on one hand the men in my circle who actually read as a hobby and one of these is strictly history and religious texts (which is fine but not fiction). On the other hand, I know tons of women reading romance slop and the ones that don’t consoom that read women self empowerment shit.

>>24934890Except the trend pre-dates digital media by a significant bit. It started in 1968.

I just don't understand the mindset of somebody who doesn't read fiction. Don't you enjoy interacting with interesting characters, and reading compelling plots as they unfold?
>>24935299>what is autism
>>24935295Name a popular media source of short stories equivalent to old pulp magazines.,
Just enjoy life and do the things you enjoy doing. Don't put too much pressure on yourself to "do what's right" or "improve" it's all society imposed and doesn't come from within yourself. Your body is telling you something when it wants to do X over Y. It's that you enjoy X more. At the end of the day you'll die of old age just like the rest. Stop torturing yourself by stressing about what you could be doing instead and just enjoy yourself a bit.Calm down, sit in a dark room by yourself with the curtains closed and reflect on how you want to live life. Not "improve" or "what to become". But what you actually enjoy.A thought experiment I always use is I imagine all of humanity disappears today and I'm the only one left on earth. How would I spend my days? That's the thing that you actually care about if there is no societal pressure and bullshit ingrained habits...
I am a man. I cum inside of women, and some men's mouths. I hit and lift inanimate objects, and some men's mouths. I read fiction.
>>24934820It's feminism. Feminism pushed men out and gay shit in.
Men don't read because they get their dose of escapism from video games. Reading therefore is only permitted when there is utility to it, which is why most guys will have at least one self help slop book in their collection for the sake of it
>>24935504But there's no escapism in video games anymore.
>>24935648which explains the uptick of retards on this board going "i love elden souls, books for this feel bros???"
I read mostly non-fiction but it's mostly because I don't read as much as I used to so when I do I want to learn something. I'm still a retard though, so I may need to reevaluate this.
>>24934820Times change, standards change. Also, there's likely a bit of influence from undereducation (i.e., people not learning how to read properly) and people with aphantasia (which makes it harder to see mental images inside one's mind) nope-ing out of reading because of the complexity of mental images needed for fiction as opposed to non-fiction.
>>24934854>Nobody changes during the course of the story. Is that a requirement for good writing?
>>24934820Because of biological differences. Men are predisposed to solving problems & garnering 'resources' mentally that will hopefully transmute into material resources so they can procreate with the feminine - so non-fiction is optimal.Whereas the depths of the feminine imagination of something the man can't fathom, so fiction is the more enticing of the two. t.
