Need some more fantasy with romances like Lady and Croaker from first volumes of Black Company.I'm really in a bad spot in my life and need it like medicine.

Why didn't Naomi, Alex and Amos mutiny against Holden? Early in the book, on the first ship (can't remember the name) we learn that people like and trust Holden. Fine. But then he starts a war. People (Like Naomi) say that it's sort of his fault, to which he replies like a baby that it isn't his fault because he's an idiot ("idealist") and does not understand anything about humans and politics. So what happens when he learns something new? He broadcasts "This time it was Earth" and acts all surprised when the war escalates ("Is this my fault"?). Holy shit. Naomi is 9/10 times wiser than he is, the books just mentions ONCE that she "does not have the nerve for being a captain" or some such BUT HOLY SHIT she couldn't be a worse captain than Holden. So why does he keep getting away with it? Did I miss some part where he actually gave them a reason to trust his judgement after starting AND escalating a war ON ACCIDENT because he's an idiot who couldn't stop acting like a childish tattletale?
>>24933261 >a focus on cursed, dysfunctional familiesBut enough about you
I genuinely think women characters should a be put in the backseat to epic fantasy stories. Who gives a shit about a woman’s inner monologue as the male protagonists are out actually doing things (i.e. real life)? The women characters are for male protagonists to arrive after their adventure and pump them full of babies.
I've been reading The Howler from the Void on Ao3. It's been a fun ride so far, one of the better original sci-fi stories I've stumbled across recently.
first for Greg Egan

>>24936950Hey girl/fag/"PoC".So let's say you were over at a new friend's house for the first time. Everyone's hanging out, having a good time. But then, all of a sudden, you feel a rumble-rum in your tummy-tum. You wouldn't just let it rip right there, ruining your pants and your new friend's nice white couch and everyone's good time, would you? No, I don't think you would, because you're a kind and considerate person. You would excuse yourself to the appropriate space, in this case the bathroom, shit your pants in there, and then clean yourself up before you came back out.Well, the internet is like your new friend's house, and 4chan is kind of like your new friend's nice white sofa, and saying things like "but enough about [x]" is exactly the same thing as shitting your pants. You came in here and you took a big, fat, steaming Reddit right on our couch. What you should have done was excused yourself to the appropriate space, in this case the metaphorical bathroom of Reddit, and shit your pants in there. So the next time you feel a big stinky-stink like that coming on, go ahead and just fuck off immediately to Reddit. It's really not asking a lot, it's just common decency. Thanks in advance!
>>24937036>responds to a well known meme with the most reddit post possibleWhat in the newfaggotry is this? Literally do not breed, you faggot cuck nigger
>>24937051Oh, sweetie. Maybe that's a meme when you're popping a squat over on Reddit, but it's definitely not a meme here, and it's not going to be. K, thanks!
>>24937058> Maybe that's a meme when you're popping a squat over on RedditBut seriously enough about you
>>24937066Someone's going to have to clean this sofa. For free.
Just marathoned this in preparation for the newest black company book. It is actually beyond mind-boggling that every single chapter has three or four instances where it’s mentioned how sexy thirteen and fourteen year old girls are. And that isn’t a fucking exaggeration. This entire book revolves around the constant rape, murder, and worse of teenage girls>starts off with a teenage girl getting raped to death by Melkor and thrown in a sewer>the girl gets brought back to life by a necromancer and you just begin to believe this might turn into an odd father-daughter pairing, but then the fucker starts having necrophiliac sex with her cold and smelly corpse>necroperv goes to Siberia and creates a paradise where he can live with two teenage girls and raise the rapebaby while kidnapping other women to breastfeed said rapebaby>rapebaby grows up and rapes the children of the milkers into carrying a fuckton of genetic clones of his zombie mother>fast forward and there’s an epidemic of sexy teenage clones, to the point one is being popped out every three months and there are hundreds of sexy teenage clone girls running around orphanages that double as teenage girl whore houses>Black Company starts rounding up teenage girls like they’re Pokémon >the end goal being to neutralize the threat by either raping or killing the dozens of teenage girls they’ve foundGlen, what the fuck? Why is this entire book about old men raping and murdering and lusting after teenage girls?
>>24937101I’ll take a shit on your grandmother’s face, how about that?
>>24937128Because he had no idea what to do anymore and should've left the series when it ended 25 years ago. Lies Weeping is just as meandering with two bimbos who have little interest in anything being Company annalists.
Just finished mistborn, HAD TO SEE WHAT ALL THE FUSS WAS ABOUT, It's ok.
>>24937128i thought this is a western military serieswhy does this look like chink shit
>>24937180They travel the entire world, while the main characters are white euro types and the story starts where thats common, eventually they move on from there.
>>24937168You know what, no. Everybody had to wear masks for years because you Redditfaggots were crying about your poor grandmas. You're not going to destroy society for your grandma and then treat mine like that.
>>24937185What part of society is destroyed?
>>24937189the society of STRAIGHT WHITE MALE GAMERS of course
>>24937189To name a few:>The last remnants of the middle class>Millions of jobs and small businesses>The cost of goods and services and so real wages>Gen Z's and Gen A's education and so their future prospects>Mental health
>>24937180Cook got into anime around the time he wrote Port of Shadows which is why there's not Japanese characters with Japanese names
What do we make of the Mordew series here? Been reading the first book today. It's not bad kind of reminiscent of Mieville's Bas-Lag with a sprinkle of Dickens here and there. You can definitely tell it was influenced a lot by Peake in several areas.
I think I'd like a story where it's not immediately obvious who the MC's love interest is going to be the first time they interact, but I haven't found one.
I wish Black Library would raise their standards a bit
>>24937128Melkor did not rape girl because he was cordial with the Senjaks and that would strain their alliance. The guards responsible for disposing of the girls mistook her for one and threw her in the sewer. This is corroborated by Shivetya's time delving in Lies Weeping.Necroperv took one of the zombie-senjak's eggs while performing necroperversion and clone them a bunch.Rapebaby had no libido or physical attraction to the clones or his mother also did the same cloning.Croaker got mindraped by the Lady so his memories might as well have been altered so the raping of the clones to create more clones might as well have been how they were popping out every month. It might have been meant as a prelude for Lies Weeping but then the the publication of Lies Weeping got delayed by two decades
>>24937444I was surprised by how relevant PoS was to LW.

this made the nytimes 100 notable books of the yearis it time for /sffg/ to get on the romantasy bandwagon?
I finished Children of Hurin. It was pretty good.Debating on whether to start reading Beren and Luthien or wait until I get the books I ordered in.I'm waiting for Bakker's the darkness that comes before, Guy Gavriel Kay's Lion's of Al-Rassan and also the 6th Malazan book.

since we were talking about brandon sanderson's mental health stuff you guys see he's making "mental health coins" that have emergency numbers on them and quotes from his books and people are eating this up like it's the best, most caring thing ever? Even Daniel Greene defended it as serious and even said it was something that people might think is corny, but will actually help people...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXyWtp8tuYY#t=19mJust look at what Sanderson says at the timestamp and the comments. Am I out of touch? Because this feels weird as hell.
>>24938113Because he's part of the mormon mafia of the fantasy genreThese people will cancel authors who speak up against mormon nepotism
>>24938113Eh... I'm not a Sanderson fan, but I don't see any issues with it. I'll admit it's corny as hell, but whatever.

>>24938596I think if I had tried to finish reading Stormlight Archive I would need one of these coins. To be fair, Book 1 of the series made me feel a bit better during a really bad time in my life, but it was one of those moments where I just needed something unashamedly positive and life-affirming, regardless of whether or not it was good.
>>24937300One does not simply walk into Morde-
>>24936620>reading about other people's romance fullfils youThis is one step away from cuckery
>>24937655I enjoyed going through the three First Age novels in one go (Children of Hurin - Beren & Luthien - The Fall of Gondolin). Keep in mind the first novel is the most complete and the latter two are more fragmented and conflicting. But if you're reading Tolkien at this level you know what your are getting into.
>>24937334this is a fiction problem in generalcasts are never going to be *that* big, and even decently sized casts are going to be spread out. Otherwise it's just very obvious *before* they even interact who will is likely to pair up. at most you'll get a situation where MC might get with A or B, and mayyyyybe C, and that's barely any better
>>24936816It's simple: Holden is the hero of the story. No matter how retarded he is, he never sees real consequences for his actions and everything always ends up being better for him. This happens over and over and over again.
I loved the books of the north. I liked the first half of Silver Spike and tolerated the rest, and Shadow Games. But this shit bored the fuck out of me. Had to force myself to even skim. Will it get better, worse, or the same from here?

>>24939002That's not what makes a hero. I get that you're trying to bend something out of shape into a shape, but this just doesn't work on any level. He's no different than Jaws, really, except maybe Jaws had a realistically achievable goal.
