Real Gothic Literature reccomendations. If you read all of these then you can move on to books written after the gothic golden age (Dracula) or books that aren't fully gothic yet use gothic themes (Frankenstein)
Books
>Longsword by Thomas Leland (Proto-Gothic)
>The Adventures of Ferdinand Count Fathom by Tobias Smollett (Proto Gothic)
>The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole (Start with this one)
>The Mysteries of Udolpho, Romance of the Forest, and the Italian by Anne Radcliffe
>The Monk by MG lewis
>The Mysterious Freebooter, The Midnight Bell and the Castle of Ollada by Francis Lathom
>The Haunted Cavern by John Palmer
>Melmoth the Wanderer by Charles Maturin
Short Story collections
>Literary Hours by Nathan Drake
>Great Tales of Terror by Peter Haining
Poetry
>Tales of Terror and Wonder by MG lewis

How is Radcliffe's work besides Udolpho? I read that and am over all, in retrospect, glad I did, but she did take 200 pages hiking and describing how sublime the mountains are before I ever got to see the castle

It starts out funny and becomes goofy and then toward the end becomes very horror

Great book, but like Dracula came after the Gothic Golden age that lasted from the 1760s to the year 1820

Less long winded than udolpho though it's a female gothic work so feel free to skip over them if you didn't like udolpho

I don't like watching movies of a book I'm reading because after that I have the faces of the actors in my mind when I read the book and I hate it
