Finished picrel, thoroughly enjoyed it. Moves very quickly, introduces story beats that are sometimes grounded and sometimes fantastical. After reading lotr earlier this year and generally disliking it, I can see where Tolkien drew his inspiration, and I can see why it inspired him.

As for the translation, it gets the job done. Conveys the energy, but I often felt I was missing out on some of the poetics. Still, for something this short, it was nice breeze through it.

I will say that the conclusion just sort of happens, without much set up or payoff. Wiglaf is introduced in the same scene that he becomes the new hero, despite there being a storied history between the two. Still, that was a minor gripe with an otherwise gripping and fun work.

But it was written in English in the first place?

Yes, that's English. It's archaic and might need some footnotes, but it's English.

And what of good Tolkien, how would he translate Beowulf?

To prose, you say?

Didn't Tolkien start making an alliterative verse version of it too, but never finished it?

Go on, anon. Give us yours.

Why would I translate something that's written in English? Or do you mean translate it into some other language?

Why don't you just plainly tell me what it says

It says exactly what it says. Can't you read English?

Yeah man you're real funny. Got em laughin in the Beowulf thread

Tolkien was a scholar and is 90% of the reason regular people even know what Beowulf is today. His translation was published very posthumously and probably not ironed out. It's still better than Heaney
