I'm really enjoying this so far. Don't see ti mentioned here often (or ever?). The narration is great. It feels conspiratorial and ironic, like he is leaning over my shoulder and laughing with me at the vanity of these people. Where are the Stendhal enjoyers at?

As I read this novel I can't help but wonder how much of my machinations and assumptions and ideas about the world are but hundreds of vain follies and misconceptions

I see clearly that I was as foolish as this boy... it's undeniable. What terrifies me is that I have never been less foolish and I will live and die blind to my vanity... Can I save myself?
