Just read this tonight in Goethe's Italian Journey. Apparently Goethe didn't like blondes and preferred dark hair instead. Go figure.

I wanna read Goethe, where do I start and what are the requirements for a full understanding?
>>24939554It helps to know about greco-roman antiquity but in general you can just read him. Start with Young Werther, but keep in mind its also not representative of Goethes work as a whole. Id say you can ignore most plays except for Faust, which is his most important work, but also not really representative of Goethes work of body, and may overwhelm you if not familiarized.

>>24939707So between Werther and Faust what should you read
>>24939900ntaI started with Iphigenia in Tauris and moved onto Italian Journey. Read synopses of the novels and plays to see if they'll interest you. Eventually I'll get to Faust, and Eckermann's Conversations with Goethe. Winckelmann and his Century interests me too.
>>24940087What do you like some much about Goethe?
>>24940247His insatiable curiosity didn't leave him throughout his life. I felt the same about myself, but I had to suppress it and get a damn job. He of course had a better life setup, but even he felt a little constrained by duties. Inspired by stories about Winckelmann he took off for Italy for a few years. Some people like the path Napoleon took, but that's all war and destruction. Goethe just created. Two out of nowhere characters. Goethe being the more Nietzschean
>>24939900>>24940087Don't forget Wilhelm Meister's apprenticeship. Probably his best work after Faust.
