Just finished this, why exactly is it supposed to be the greatest thing ever written?
>>
>>24941591
It's a play, not a book are you dumbass

MacBeth is better.
>>
>>24941591
Every time you reread it, you notice something new. Of course, that's true for longer masterpieces, but Hamlet is only 30,000 words. It really is a Poem Unlimited.

Hamlet is literally me
>>

Something, something, the reformation . . . And something, something, Hamlet is the first modern man -- who is confronted with nihilism. "Quintessence of dust," etc.

I don't want to read about you guys. I want to read about someone interesting.
>>
>>24941774
That's the thing with Hamlet, you'll find a bit of everyone in him. Once you read it, you'll find out he's literally YOU.
>>
there seems to have been a lot of worry in the 16th century about deliberating too long before taking decisive action. i wonder what decisive, exceptional situation they could have felt themselves delaying decision upon
>>
>>24941987
Only because Shakespeare just made the character act however was convenient to progress the plot or deliver a monolgue rather than any real inspiration or consistency, as is confirmed by Hamlet having 2 ages
>>
>>24942014
>made the character act however was convenient to progress the plot
Dumbest statement about Hamlet I've ever read by someone who at least pretends to have studied it. I'll let you figure out why.
>>
teenagers love misunderstanding the classics so they can proffer ad hoc editorializing to pretend to be above it all with their barely concealed smugness

>oh yeah, all those phds and critics think this is a masterpiece? well I read the book once and I found it PRETENTIOUS
>>
>>24942014
Its crazy you wrote this out and thought this was an intelligent observation. He certainly wrote the story to tell a story. Good job, guy.

William Shakespeare was the pen name od Edward De Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford. Much of Hamlet is taked from his.own life experiences.

>>24941649
If you're in grade school.
>>
>>24941649
In what way? None of the characters in it were terribly interesting, whereas Hamlet is.

>>24942005
I don't know, what. Is it something about jews
>>
>>24943383
Correct and facts
>>
>>24943423
I don‘t know, but our collective failure to take decisive, exceptional action on the jewish question is why the play still resonates.

It's not your fault you don't get Shakespeare. Not everyone can be white.

Absolute truth nuke. Nothing more embarassing than watching Americans trying to understand something they never can, flailing about in their negroid muttness. I suspect you and I will get a lot of seething (You)’s from nonwhites/Americans (although I guess the ‘American’ part is redundant.

Hamlet has a lot of high-minded ideas which have gotten substantially less interesting with time, plus the plot is meandering and difficult to follow. It was meant to educate and entertain the people of its era so we don't need to laud it as the greatest narrative ever just because Shakespeare's name is on it. Othello is my favorite Shakespeare play btw.

My second favourite is unironically Titus Andronicus but my favorite play is actually Volpone by Ben Johnson

I read it when I was a teenager (doesn't even count!) and got completly filtered but still loved it.
Sofar, I loved every Shakespeare play I read. I studied (analytical) philosophy at uni for almost a decade and in Shakespeare I rediscovered what made me want to study philosophy in the first place.
