I'm reading the introduction for this book and the author is talking about having a feminist epiphany and not understanding how to write until contemporary feminist writers taught her how. Is this foid slop worth my time?
>>24943037Definitely worth your time, it's good stuff, lots of fun. What she means is that she was born too early for the modern waves of feminism, so when she made the culture of Earthsea sexist way back in 1968, it wasn't done as a political statement, it was just the author writing what she knows from real life. Women aren't allowed to become wizards in the Earthsea world, they aren't permitted to enter the wizarding school and their culture won't permit them to study wizardry on their own.If you're expecting a "foid slop" where a Strong Female Protagonist defies the rules and becomes a wizard anyway, then you can relax. That doesn't happen. By the time the series is over, there are STILL no female wizards. One woman was almost accepted to the wizarding school to learn how to become a wizard, but she was eventually forced to leave without becoming a wizard. The author respects her own world enough to not wave a magic wand and fix everything. The best book in the series is, IMHO, after the author's feminist awakening. She wrote the 4th book two decades after the first 3, and it's about how it kinda sucks to live as a woman in that universe. The protagonist of that book is a middle-aged woman who adopts an abused and abandoned child, they travel to comfort an old friend who's dying, they live off the land for a while, and she has a personal journey about making peace with her own life. She doesn't change the world, she doesn't save the world, she's not a Girlboss who teaches all the boys that #Girlbosses #Can #Do #Wizardry #Too, and instead it's just a sobering honest look at the consequences of the author's own worldbuilding. And I love it. And I hope you won't miss out on it.
>>24943137Stfu tranny>>24943037You could be reading the greeks
>>24943137Thanks anon, this is a really helpful post.
Were there any alterations in the 2012 publication?
>>24943037Dumb faggot bitch who wrote these books explicitly with the agenda in mind of subverting the "trope" of the main characters in fantasy typically being "white" and "male".>>24943137Ignore this faggot, read this instead. Much better female author, much more interesting story, much more fleshed out characters.
>>24943137The last book is interesting as an older reader but as a youngun I thought it was rather edgy and disturbing with its undisguised overtones of sexual violence.LeGuin is a bit of a hack desu. But first book is pretty fantastic before she tries to be subversive.Honestly, even Left Hand of Darkness and Dispossessed are merely okay as well.Goes to show how much shitty genreslop there is that such lacklustre stuff as hers is considered the classics and cream of the crop.
>>24943037Don't read anything written by her in recent decades, including the foreword apparently. The original trilogy is excellent even if the more recent novels are pure femcel slop
>>24943037She was a better short story writer.
>>24943037No, she literally did this to have non-White non-male characters.
