Modern romance is literally just a dopamine trap engineered by consumer culture to keep you chasing a high that doesn't exist. You're all addicted to this utopian fantasy of love because you've been brainwashed by movies and novels into rehearsing these fictional emotions until real life feels like a pale boring imitation of the imaginary original. It's the Emma Bovary effect, you're miserable because you're comparing your actual relationships to high-definition hallucinations where the anticipatory emotion is the only thing that feels good. The irony is that the moment you actually get close to someone the fantasy collapses because idealization requires distance to survive. Familiarity breeds contempt, or at least daily irritation, destroying that aesthetic perfection you worshipped from afar. And now, between dating apps turning everyone into a checklist of stats and science reducing your so-called soulmate connection to basic brain chemistry, the magic is dead on arrival. You're left with chasing the longing itself because the reality is just a rationalized, disappointing mess that can never measure up to the hype.

The push for romance stories is a campaign in the war on masculinity. It strips away the glory of men conquering tangible conflicts and exploring abstract ideals in favor of maudlin humdrum frippery.

Romantic love is a scam invented by poets to sell more poetry.

I agree Op. However I would go ahead and claim not only love is a consumerist myth. So is "happiness" in general.

Happiness is something that can never be reached. It's the journey of improvement and introspection that counts. No one in history has ever been happy because it's a fake construct. This is why the concept of depression is so dangerous, it gives the illusion that it's a problem of lacking happiness, something that is illusive and not tangible.

It seems gen z in particular has a lot of issues with grasping that happiness is a fake construct. So they complain about feeling empty inside and aimless. The truth is that this is universal throughout history and you should instead focus on introspection and what you actually want to do with life, while not factoring in this concept of "happiness".
