Hm.

It's one of those books you can kinda just skim large swaths of without missing too much
>>
I read White Noise, but didn't particularly care for it.
Is Underworld better?

I love White Noise but don't particularly care for Underworld so you might like it

Read Libra or Mao II instead

It is better but I still would say it is not worth the time sink
Prologue is amazing, everything with Hoover is great, the OP chapter is a standout, but you will still get hundreds upon hundreds of pages of which you will retain nothing
>>
It really is strange how bloated this thing is. I also don't remember enormous chunks, including OP's reference. Other than the opening I mostly remember the nuns and the graffiti artist guy (who had AIDS or something? Or his friends did?) but only vaguely.
I recall despising the protagonist and his endless staring wistfully out windows and shit.

pomo formula is so lame
1.take real life person
2.mix pop culture reference
3.have them do wacky things

The Hoover parts were so good it was disappointing that he didn't just write a whole book with Hoover as the main character. That's the main issue with Underworld, though: not that it's a bad book but that some sections are so obviously better it's frustrating that most of the book covers less interesting stuff. I also liked the old hypochondriac dude who was obsessed with baseball statistics and the highway serial killer sounded interesting but never went anywhere. I will say on the thematic level this was probably his intention. The motif of the book is garbage and all the little incidental things and objects that get lost and ignored. I get the impression that Delillo intended for the reader to come away from the book lacking a sense of cohesion and forgetting a lot of what went on, but whether you want to subject yourself to that is your call. Still an enjoyable read for me; great prose and atmosphere.

Dude every single Delillo book has a protagonist who does nothing so Don has excuse to segue into philosophical musings as they stare out a window or walk around. I generally like Delillo but c'man man lol, he needs to be more creative in connecting his plots to his philosophizing.

Afaik the protagonist was based on Leopold Bloom.

I'm not sure if that's from that book but there is actually an Eisenstein lost film called Bezhin meadow. It's about a Ukrainian man whose son is killed by the Soviets so he sets fire to the collective farm he lives on (ie Bezhin meadow). It was banned for being reactionary.

Do you say Delillo or De Lillo?
