>evil cannot *uurp* create
*plagiarizes Wagner's Ring Cycle*

you don't need to let us know of your race
>>
Fun fact, one of Hitler's decrees (can't remember if military or domestic) was named after the Helmet that turns you invisible from the Ring Cycle.
>>
>>24944745
If you actually think that you haven't read The Ring of the Nibelung.
>>
>>24944840
No, Op is right. There aren't that many similarities but some are so obvious that it's impossible Tolkien wasn't influenced by Wagner.
>>
>>24944832
It was named for the incantation that activates it, and it predates Wagner

Wagner is one of the only writers I've read who was as wise as the Greeks
>>

Wagner plagiarized mythology
>>
everything is a plagiarism
>>
>>24945653
Wagner didn't write the Nibelungenlied it's a historical epic that he was inspired by.
>>
>>24945839
Only Götterdämmerung is an adaptation of the Nibelungenlied (heavily modified, to fit the almost purely invented story he told in the preceding three operas)
>>
>>24945839
There's no all-powerful ring in the Nibelungenlied, doofus.
>>
>>24945839
The idea of the corrupting ring that's symbolic of the cosmic cycle was a purely Wagnerian innovation
>>
>>24944745
The ring idea does proceed them both. It seems like he probably took it from W. but I doubt Tolkien could understand Wagner, we know he couldn't understand Shakespeare. Wagner has nothing to do with this nerd slop so I'm okay with Tolkien fans being in denial. I don't really understand how people identify with hobbits as their hero
>>
>>24946424
>we know

Who is "we"? You got a rat in your pocket, Trotsky?
>>
>>24946427
It's well known that he didn't like Shakespeare
>>
I wonder if the fact Tolkien is so popular is a point against it -- that like Harry Potter it marks out the confines of contemporary culture, the fantasy of being a hobbit in war with the great powers becomes mere escapism, because anyway the idea of a hobbit being a hero in this manner is laughable. This isn't the same or of the same spirit of what Jesus said in favor of the poor, this is just a fantasy and nerd slop -- anyway this point deserves further investigation, the meaning of the nerd, the origins of the nerd ... one can say at least that all true poetry is nerd-proof. Tolkien's Catholic dogmatism is a point against him -- it at least bears testament to an inferior mind, freaking out about his sons remarriage. Why does Tolkien appeal to people like Alex Karp? That's a serious question, I don't know enough about his work to set out details exactly
>>
>>24946424
C.S. Lewis was a Wagnerian and studied the libretto of Die Walkure with Tolkien in preparation for them translating it which never eventuated.
>>
Feds and Antis sure are trying to turn people against Tolkien because he proved that they are evil and the world they are creating is evil.
>>
N. Frye said something in the way of fantasy being dominant in a society that feels deeply its impermanence. I've never read perhaps only one or two fantasy books as a child (I think actually Harry Potter 1 and the Hobbit) and at this point have no idea what the appeal of them is. I would like to just dismiss it as "slop" but it is highly interesting why certain slop prevails at certain times. There is significance here but I don't know what it is.

Interesting. Yeah, I actually was surprised to see Lewis think so highly of Wagner's poetry, I can't find the quote but it was something like mythic poet beyond compare
>>

Still kino though.

>The ring idea does proceed them both
It's from The Republic. Plato uses the idea of a ring that makes the wearer invisible to illustrate some moral point.

many such cases, i don't know why he cause so much seethe for the untermensch trash here
>>
>>24947021
The Ring of Gyges may have influenced Tolkien, but it wasn't a direct influence on Wagner. It also wasn't a corrupting ring, and was less of a narrative and more of a philosophical exercise on morality.

crazy that you believe tolkien would subscribe to nietzscheshit philosophy

Feeling sad for Isengard's population. They were basically deformed en masse only to be defeated in less than a year and their city was flooded by pissed-off trees.

german myth plagiarized by german vs filthy anglo plagiarizing german myth
>>
>>24947983
Germanic myth is called Germanic myth for a reason, and it includes Scandinavian, German, Dutch and English mythologies.

>>24948024
english are not germanic and the reason tolkien stole was bc he lacked english myth

Are you talking about their Celtic ancestry, or are you drawing a distinction between Germanic and Nordic (which the Normans were)?
>>
>>24948051
celtic, normans were only a minority in the aristocracy
