i guess because he just spend almost two decades at the chateau d'if wallowing in his own rancor filled power fantasies and he wants to ruin them just like he daydreamed about every day of his life in prison. dantes is clearly traumatized and arguably insane by his captivity, he acts like an instrument of divine providence when he's just a petty broken man who can't simply enjoy freedom and his riches and needs to further dig himself into isolation and opium filled delusions.
