How do I get into James Joyce if I'm not Irish and I got filtered by Finnegans Wake?
>>
>read beforehand
Dubliners
Portrait
Hamlet
Odyssey

Try to not get filtered by Proteus, the rest of the book is not that bad other than Oxen. Sirens has a retarded start, but it quickly returns back to normal.
>>
Why on Earth would you want to?

only dubliners is good. so just read that

This, but also read the KJV bible (especially Genesis, Exodus, and the Gospels), Flaubert, Tolstoy & Dostoevsky (all admired by Joyce), and some Ibsen plays (revered by Joyce)

Joyce, like all great "Irish" writers, were of English stock. That is, their ancestral origin was in England. Having moved to Ireland in late Middle Ages or early modern period for administrative aristocratic purposes, colonial.

>having moved to Ireland in late Middle Ages
Describes almost the entire population of Ireland. There's been enough admixture, both ways and over a long enough period, that Irish and English are genetically indistinguishable, and this has been the case since at least the 1850s when most of the primarily Gaelic stock either died or migrated.

>I am made in such a way that I do not care much for the output from your Wholesale Safety Pun Factory nor for the darknesses and unintelligibilities of your deliberately entangled language system. It seems to me you are wasting your genius.

Sadly an Irish visa is needed to read James Joyce. Any illegal alien caught reading James Joyce without his papers in order shall be sent to work as a menial Airbnb servant in Lisbon or as a barista eunuch in Barcelona.

t. a woke feminist heiress whose one contribution to the world was bankrolling Joyce. Pound saw the genius of FW.

>>24952593
If you haven't read his previous works, do that, in published order. Also read Pound's ABC of reading while working your way through Dubliners/Portrait. Then when you get to FW pick up the McHugh annotations book and also start reading Our Exagmination Round His Factification for Incamination of Work in Progress.

You can burden yourself with more secondary resources but I think thats a good bare minimum for you to go into the work with enough knowledge to interpret some of it while not having too much already formed in your mind.

Joyce was woke

What you will need to do first is to be catechized in the Catholic faith. Ideally, a Jesuit would help you with this, but you will only get liberation theology from them these days.

Once you have converted, read Ibsen, Shakespeare, and the Greeks. Don't forget to masturbate often. Next comes the most important part: apostatize. Completely denounce the Faith in your heart and declare war against God.

Now you can enjoy Joyce!

Fuck all that shit. Just read Joyce's works in chronological order.
>>
>>24952693
Why would he need to read the Iliad, you pillock?
>>
>>24952613

>Joyce
He was Catholic

>Pound saw the genius of FW.
Errrrr what?
>Nothing so far as I make out, nothing short of divine vision or a new cure for the clap can possibly be worth all the circumambient peripherization.
