You throw some trash in the bushes, some old lady sees it, tells all her friends, and for the next five-six years you're known as "that guy who doesn't care if the rest of us live in a garbage dump". You step on somebody's shoe and brush it off but six months later it's mid-winter and they haven't seen the sunshine or gone outside in weeks and they decide to avenge themselves by breaking into your house and cutting your head off with a sword. The polite tidiness is a survival mechanism more than anything.
