Is he perhaps the most successful writer in his lifetime?I mean, he got a baronetcy for his efforts, built a massive manor for himself and got a free cruise courtesy of the Royal Navy
>>24958535He wrote stories for sturdy, self-assured men. /lit/ prefers to read gay stories about womanly gossip and self-doubt (all the Russians, Austen etc) or liberal self hating stuff like Moby Dick.
Ivanhoe sucks. It's goyslop for the swinish multitudes.
>>24958583>Ivanhoeit's definitely philosemitic
>Is he perhaps the most successful writer in his lifetime? He was in heavy debt for the last ten years of his life and had to resort to writing yearly books to make up for it.
>>24958535First of all, what do you mean by "success"? Commercial? General fame? Critical acclaim? In pure terms of money, the modern slop writers surely beat him: Agatha Christie, Colleen Hoover, Danielle Steele, Barbara Cartland. Stephen King. J. K. Rowling, etcGeorges Simenon sold a lot of books I think. If you want "commercial plus critical" then Dickens would be my bet for the 19th Century. For the 20th, I'm not sure. Hemingway was pretty successful.
>>24958535Mark Twain made millions, but then lost it all investing in some printing system. But he then wrote another bunch of books and went on a speaking tour and made another fortune IIRC.
>>24958583The quality of his writing or character was not the question posed.
>>24958642I don't know how OP isn't aware of this, it's like one of the major events of Scott's life. I believe his books weren't even making the publishers money after a certain point and he waas getting fucked on the weak copyright laws of the time losing him tons of money on pirated editions abroad. There's an entire section of his wiki page titled "Financial problems and death."
>>24958574What kind of books did the working class read? I why to layup in from r slap Marc
>>24958789Is it success if you're majorly read by women?
>>24960313they weren't taught how to read (thank god)
>>24958535Sorry, are you comparing him to other authors during his lifetime, or all authors during their own lifetimes?
>>24958535I recently started Ivanhoe and love it.
>>24958535If you think a successful writer is denoted by commercial "success" or by "achievements" then fucking never read again please
>>24961167Calm down buddy
>>24958535He fucking bankrupted himself.
>>24958535Ivanhoe is high-test kino.>the black knight revealMust have made 19th century gentlemen point at the book and do basedjak facesalso>characterization includes phrenological description of skull shape
>>24958574What kinda takes are these? Do you just make up opinions by putting some random writers on a dartboard and throwing some random adjectives on whatever writer the dart lands on?
>>24961331Please just shut the fuck up
