He wasn't promised a horrible death, he was promised that nobody would mourn him or remember him fondly. Do people not remember you fondly or unfondly based on your actions?

He was promised to exist in a private hell in death on account of living in a private hell in life, by his own choosing. He had to live in heaven in life to go to heaven when he died.
