What is the greatest "high school reading" book? Excluding ancient poems and plays
>>
Catcher in the Rye, obviously
>>
>>24967276
This
>>
Of Mice and Men. Blew me away when I was 17, though I was reading it for leisure. Something about reading a book for class sapped the enjoyment out of it when I was in school.
I read Catcher in the Rye for leisure too at the same age, but that shit's boring tripe and the prose pissed me off.

Great Gatsby is a good "babies first modernist" book
It makes kids feel really good when they 'figure' out that the narrator is a narcissistic piece of shit and complete hypocrite

Probably 1984. By that time in my life, I had completely given up reading and was all in on video games, but when I eventually had to crack open 1984 for the end of year exam, I quickly became entirely enamored by it. I couldn't put it down. Even as a dumb-fuck teenager, I recognized how prescient it was, and that's probably why I found it so thrilling and so captivating. Definitely the best book I'd read up to that point.
>>
>>24967414
that book is so boring and uninspired compared to Brave New World tho
>>
I liked the Great Gatsby a lot when I read it as a teenager, I should re-read it soon
Of Mice and Men and Animal Farm were ok
>>
>>24967268
>Animal Farm
One of the biggest psyops of all time
>>
>>24967268
Brave New World
>>
>>24967618
brave new world is way more dense though, it's hard to read for most kids

>>24967268
charlotte's web kinda gas ngl
>>
>>24967268
For me it was probably Tale of Two Cities, read in 9th grade Honors English.
>>
Richard III. We read it out loud in class.
>>
I think now that I actually like reading im gonna go back and actually read some of these high school books I was assigned but never actually read. I'm thinking to do lord of the flies, catcher and brave new world, because I actually read most of those and I remmber them being good. What else should I read? I remmber grapes of wrath was boring but I wanna give Steinbeck another try
>>
>>24967414

Redditors that /lit/ parodied a decade ago are now the people that post on /lit/. Bleak.

>>24967268
Moby Dick
>>
>>24968432
Steinbeck was hack. Don't bother.
>>
>>24968341
Richard III is very good but desu I've always thought Henry VI pt2+3 were more entertaining reads.
>>
>>24967835
Faggot ass retard commie.
>>
>>24968432
>lord of the flies
amazing concept, boring as fuck execution
stops being good the moment of its main misfortune, and even then it was something of a slog to get to that point
the plot synopsis is far more satisfying than the text itself

>catcher
I can barely recall now what actually happens
the book is just emo, it's not about the plot but about validating teenage male angst; the perks of being a wallflower is more of the same

>brave new world
never read it, never once seen anyone on earth ever discuss the plot; perhaps like 1984 it has a shitty boring as fuck plot and people only read it for the didactic setting
>>
>>24967414
you sound autistic
>>
>>24967396
>good
how?
The Great Gatsby sucks
there is nothing to gain from reading it
>>
>>24968457
>>24967324
You don't understand Salinger and you shouldn't be posting on a literature board.
>>
>>24967268
Frankenstein is the best.

>extremely verbose
>innovative format
>Gothic
>godly premise
>really good plot
>fascinating backstory
>lots of symbolic and metaphorical depth
>helpful literary references

Frankenstein can singlehandedly transmute one into /lit/eracy.
>>
>>24968471
Explain how I'm wrong.
It's just Huckleberry Finn with no companion and more introspection.
It has no appeal to anyone but idealistic and cynical young men.
>>
>>24967819
Animal Farm is meant for children and retards to understand insidious tyrannical usurption. It is exemplary for that purpose.
>>
>>24968439
Moby Dick is too long and dense for high school.
>>
>>24968480
>Animal Farm is meant to slander revolutionary Marxism to Porkys new crop of exploited proletariat. It is exemplary for that evil purpose
FTFY
>>
Anyone got an alternative to pdf drive since it got shutdown?
>>
>>24968526
It's an incredibly commonly assigned book, at least historically, up there with The Scarlet Letter in American Lit classes. Didn't Rory Gilmore read that one and Crime and Punishment in HS? Has American literacy declined that much since the early 2000s?
>>
>>24968550
>American literacy
Oxymoron. Golems can't read. They can only order at McDonalds and watch sportsball.
>>
>>24968538
You're the kind of retard I'm talking about, thinking it's only about communism, and yet you still don't want to get it. There is no example of extant, working Marxism you can point to which isn't in some way objectionable by normal people.
>>
>>24968544
Gutenberg will always be there nigga.
>>
>>24967268
They make you read the Road in highshcool now
>>
>>24968550
>at least historically
that's the keyword
>up there with The Scarlet Letter
wrong, since I was made to read this and not the former (turn of last decade)
>>
gonna ignore that you excluded plays (for no good reason) and say shakespeare
>>
>>24967268
Of those I'd say Catcher. Dubliners had an affect on my too
>>24968550
>>24968439
You're a fucking retard and Moby Dick is one of my favorite books
>>
>>24967268
Brave New World. It's evergreen and a perfect warning for what we became.
>>
>>24968457
People don't talk about BNW, because then they'd have to admit that they're hypocrites, and that they reject the entire premise of the story. They want BNW to be true. That's why they don't talk about it. If you talk about it, then you'll have to accept that it's not the future you want.
>>
>>24968538
Yes? Because that's what Marxism/Communism/Socialism does. It's just a newer method of exploitation.
