It's worthless
>>24969909Probably? I've never used it before
OP said the semicolon it's worthless; not like he'd know how to use it anyways.
>>24969909I use it all the time; it feels equivalent to a half rest in musical notation. It allows for a more precise form of writing. The crusade against it by certain writers never made sense to me.
>>24969909It's worthless if your thoughts are so simple you never need to write complex sentences or you have no artful sensibility in your writing style.
>>24969909it is now de rigeur since em dashes are verboten
>>24970072I will use them — to troll anti-AI reactionaries. Its subversively satisfying — linguistic forbidden fruit.
>>24969913fail
>>24969913This is a misplaced comma; semicolons exist in a much narrower gap, yet one further away from a comma.

Jokes aside, semi-colons have a very useful application for 'stage directions'.ie one can write "A does X; B does Y", or "'X'ing; 'Y'ing" and the semi-colon will inherently imply both of these actions are happening simultaneously. I still use full-stops for when the directions are more elaborate (my """plays""" are intended to be read moreso than performed), but when you're giving a no-frills account (this applies to regular prose as well), the semi-colon is irreplaceable.
>>24970127>>24970330both wrong — it's an emdash type of situation
>>24969909>>24969913>>24969992>>24970064>>24970330>Here is a lesson in creative writing. First rule: Do not use semicolons. They are transvestite hermaphrodites representing absolutely nothing. All they do is show you've been to college.-Some over rated faggotI don't come here very often and I'm a little disappointed to see no one posted this yet.

>>24970102there's not supposed to be a gap before or after the emdash. fail.
>>24970615Actually the opposite; troon filled creative writing classes tell you not to use le heckin semicolon, just like how they tell you to write the shortest sentences possible.
>>24970615But troon MFA programs have been minimalist indoctrination centers since the 80s.

The writer loves his tools; the reader despises them.
>>24970901>correction failBoth methods — gap and no gap — are valid and acceptable.
>>24970607You can use em dash in place of every other punctuation—if you're smooth enough.
>>24969909It’s a bit effeminate and flamboyant compared to just ending your sentence with a period.

>>24969909You're calling the semicolon "worthless" because you don't know how to use it.

>>24969909For me—and I know I'm not alone here—punctuation marks are the salt and pepper of beautiful writing; an tantalizing departure from the spoken word.
