Based.
Ever read anything from Hillel? How does your book compare to his ideas?

I haven't yet in my foray into Mussar. Its on my list though. Any recs?

>I haven't yet in my foray into Mussar
Oh ok, I thought it was like a commentary on previous sources.
>Any recs?
Not much. I've only read the Pirkei Avot, which is awfully compiled (I remember some chapters having nothing to do with ethics), plus it has no gemara.
I did save the commentary by Maimonides (shemonah perakim) on the Sefaria website, but never got myself read it, so I don't know if it's good.
So yeah, I would recommend you to pick up the Avot with a commentary, but I don't know which one is the best.

Don Quixote is the best fiction read of this year, despite being a massive book it delivered and I had great pleasure reading it.
For non-fiction it's mostly history books. I just randomly got passionate about history again since I forgot most of the things ever taught in school so I try to catch up and I also take notes. I also want to get an introduction in philosophy since I'm a STEMcel so I never got that bit of knowledge in the first place and I find it fascinating.
For 2026 I definitely plan to read much more.
What about you anon?

>how Jewish literature works
I'm not talking about "Jewish literature", I'm talking about the Avos.
All of the Mishnah tractates has gemara, except for the Avot. It's supposed to be the tractate on ethics, and I would have accepted some halakah mixed in, but the law in this tractate was two specific chapters, they could have easily edited them out.
>>
>>24972343
I don't know what you're trying to say. It's clearly Jewish literature because that's what it is by definition. The Talmud has specific sections that are named specific things, And they frequently, almost without exception, mention tangential and unrelated things to the name of the tractate. For example, Tractate Rosh Hashanah contains lots of information, not even remotely related to Rosh Hashanah. I'm not sure why you're imposing a personal and unrealistic standard that isn't actually established on the formation or format of specific books.
>>
>>24972348
Not that anon, but hmm… the Talmud sounds like the Qur’an in how its chapters have nearly no reference in their name to its content.
>>
>>24972363
Ok
>>
>>24972348
>It's clearly Jewish literature because that's what it is by definition
Ok, let me make myself more clear.
I don't talk about Jewish literature in the broader sense, I'm talking about the Avot specifically, a tractate that is very much sui generis.
>Talmud
That's probably because it is built upon the Mishnah structure (and contents).
It also adds a lot of stuff from other sources too, like the Tosefta.
The Talmud is at the end of the day a commentary on previous halakhic works, of course it's not gonna be awfully compiled.
It's a different matter from the text it is commenting upon.
The Mishnah was both the commentary and the formalization of what came before. I don't think there are previous sources for Hillel's opinions, for example.
The Mishnah had way more freedom in its systematizing efforts than the Talmud.

I'd recommend you to read a couple Wikipedia articles (at least) before going into Hillel.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zugot
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tannaim
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amoraim
Simplifying a lot:
Zugot is where you can find Hillel's opinions.
Tannaim is where you can find the Mishnah.
Amorraim is where you can find the gemara on the Mishnah (Talmud).
The way the law is compiled in these eras differs a lot, you shouldn't conflate them with one another.
>>
>>24972380
Okay, so your initial comment was saying you just didn't like how the book was laid out then. Okay.
>>
>>24972363
>Surah of the Cow
What were they thinking?
>>
>>24972383
Basically that.
The Mishnah is a nightmare to read from cover to cover, though if you've already read some Talmud it shouldn't come to you as a suprise.
Happy reading.

>>24972388
Ah, okay. Sorry, I guess we were just talking past each other. 4chan probably isn't the best place to talk about these kinds of topics lol. I'm fairly well versed in both Talmud and Mishna, sorry if our exchange seemed off. Have a good one.
