What's so scary about recognizing your own insignificance in the grand scheme of things?

We perceive the world as somewhat stable and our being as related to more or less predictable phenomena - climate, food supply, water availability, social capital etc. Realizing that there is a grand agent (like a Lovecraftian deity) that can overturn all this stability on a whim is scary. Realizing there is no such agent but the stability is fragile is second worst, I suppose.

I don't get it either. Perhaps atheism is required, which implies an IQ within the 100 - 115 range, under which i do not fall.
Its like coming across some wild animal in the woods, its going to be a lot scarier in the dark when you can't see it because you don't know whats going on.
