>>24975922I wanted to like it cuz I love Marquez but it seemed too atmospheric for me

>>24975934Yeah, it’s very atmospheric. Also, it’s told in a fragmented manner with abrupt changes in time/narration/pov that can be somewhat obscurant so being able to grasp how each piece fits the greater whole is very rewarding on a second read. Once you get the plot/characters down then it begs to be read again and again for theme, structure, language, etc. It really is a masterpiece.
>>24975922I quite liked it, though I never felt like re-reading. I should though, may catch some details I didn't before. Lots of symbolism, too. My favourite part was when Mr. Paramo made the bells toll for weeks on end and this got the circus to show up, initiating a month long party in Comala. But all the book was great, the priest talking about the sourness of the earth was also a highlight. The book was awesome.
>>24976417A criticism I have is that, much like most Latin American literature, it isn't very subtle.
>>24976417So many sections, I couldn’t choose just one. I love how he doesn’t hit you over the head with symbolism/themes either. He’s a lot more subtle or “graceful” about it.
