I don't get the appeal
>>24982521Maybe try reading it first, I dunno.
>>24982528I read halfway and had to stop because Ignatius became too insufferable
>>24982533>He didnae even finish he boo'Then you've no business speaking about it here on /lit/. Delete this thread.
>>24982540>you must finish goyslop in its entirety before forming a discussionI guarantee you don't eat your pizza crustsFaggot
>>>A Confederacy of Dunces follows the misadventures of protagonist Ignatius J. Reilly, a lazy, overweight, misanthropic, self-styled scholar who lives at home with his mother. He is an educated but slothful 30-year-old man living in the Uptown neighborhood of early-1960s New Orleans who-Hit too close to home, eh OP?
Some identify with the main character.Go back to your sports figure bios, OP.
>>24982558I identified with him at the beginning but then he started lying and deceiving everyone as a "Catholic"Starting a nigger uprisingStealing from the hotdog manDespising his mother
>>24982563Typical catholic things to do. Sounds hilarious.
>>24982569KEK
>>24982533I tossed it after 20 or 30 pages because I found the humour and style to be very, very, cringe-inducing.
>>24982541>The first thought to grace your lumbering, diabetic mind is a food metaphorBMI higher than IQ
>>24982533Ignatius is the best part thoughbeit. The other characters apart from the Levy family and the professor make it insufferable. I don't give a fuck about the bar or Ignativs's mom.
>>24982606It was hilarious when I read it like 20 years ago. I wonder how I’d find it now.
>>24982521It's the stereotypical modern day neckbeard, but written a couple of decade earlier. Truly a book ahead of its time.
>>24982541>He doesn't eat the crust of his pizzaYou fucking psychopath.
>>24982521This phrase is used a lot, many times erroneously, but it’s very Reddit.
For some reason Redditors absolutely hate this book and I’ve never figured out why. Any ideas?
>>24982541>eating the crusts>not discarding the crusts so he can move onto the next sliceI let lower animals on the food chain pick at my bones once I'm done. If you tried to crush me to death with your personal library, I'd repeat Giles Corey's last words: "add more weight." In fact, I'd bench press you while you're nibbling at all of the little morsels of pizza I've left behind like that Taeko Kōno short story "Bone Meat." Get mogged, nerd.
>>24982654lmao
i lost all respect for ignatius after she took myrna minkoff the bbc fetisher back
>>24982742it's still funny
Apparently all it takes to turn your fanfic into a masterpiece is to die and let your grieving mom bully every publisher into printing it, because as it turns out, the writer is a meme job with no real qualifications and all that matters is if you intimately know the rich guy who's gonna merchandize your slop.
>>24983613What exactly would it even be a “fanfic” of
I thought the scene where he goes to a gay party and they're queening out over Ethel Merman was funny but yeah I didn't really get it either. Maybe the appeal is that it's a very European type of novel written by an American
>>24983703as far as i'm concerned, every unpublished work for the sake of spending time as a hobby is a fanfic. sure, he tried to publish it but they unceremoniously ghosted him. considering that it was also his first and only novel, yeah i'll call it a fan fiction.
>>24983752>considering that it was also his first and only novelIt wasn’t. The Neon Bible was written first.
>>24983467it portrays a neckbeard who is actually interesting
>>24983709i skipped that entire thing coz i'm not a millenial hipster :)
Ignatius did nothing wrong. It was all his mom's fault, but she was just a dumb hock who didn't know any better. I'm glad she met a nice older man and Ignatius ran off with the Jewess (who is probably actually Anne Frank).
How come a fat guy in new orleans dresses like he comes from Minnesota? Isn't louisiana hot and humid as fuck?
>>24982521It's one joke over and over.
>>24982533Yes, I found it hard to like, for pretty much this reason. There's nothing wrong with an unpleasant protagonist, but only if you feel that the author feels the same about him as you do. With ACOD you don't, quite. JKT is just a little bit too indulgent. You get the impression that deep down he doesn't think Ignatius is all that bad.
>>24983752>every unpublished work for the sake of spending time as a hobby is a fanficLiterally not what fanfic is, you clueless mong.
>>24982521I tried it to read it a couple times until it finally clicked. I'm not going to say read it multiple times, but I was glad to have done so.
>>24982521It's like reading a 4chan shitpost. Amusing and way ahead of it's time
>everyone just talks about how its funny>i just thought it was really depressing Its genuinely the most depressing bit of litfic I've ever read. I don't understand how people can see any comedy in it. These people must be sociopaths or aliens or something. There were multiple times in the middle of reading this that I had to set the book down and cry to myself. This book is very well written but everyone who likes it seems to drastically interpret it differently.
>>24984652you need to start TRT immediately
>>24984652Sheltered much?Sure the circumstances are depressing but nothing special really. Most people on earth live in similar squalor. The gossip, the retarded incessant conflicts, characters full of themselves. To most people it paints a very familiar picture.
>>24984719>sheltered muchNo.
