i don't think the budher ever would have done this. and his jeet monks were far less disciplined than japs

Helped me significantly in my path to attain the fruits of the Spirit that Paul talked about: "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, gentleness, self-control...and mercy"

And helped lead me away from the things Paul warned about: "For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of..hatreds, rivalry, jealousy, outbursts of fury, acts of selfishness, dissensions, factions, occasions of envy, and the like...Let us not be conceited, provoking one another...for if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he is deluding himself
....
if you go on biting and devouring one another, beware that you are not consumed by one another.
...
I say, then: live by the Spirit"

These things can still have salience. It's just a question of putting them into perspective.

why would becoming a shell without emotions help me live my life as a mammal engineered by life itself to have said emotions ?
>>
>>24988552
I don't know, I'm but a simple shell without emotions, so I can't tell.
>>
>>24988574
I'm not trolling you it's a real question. I'm on a quest to better live my life. For now Buddhism and this type of stoïcism is retarded to me and will fall apart the moment something huge happens and your animal instincts resurface (gun in the mouth or car accident type of situations or even deep depression) and so to me I feel like it's the equivalent of saying "don't be depressed" to a guy that'll jump. Kinda pretending to be stronger than emotions
>>
>>24988591
you misunderstand buddhism. it won't necessarily take away your emotions or keep your animal instincts from resurfacing. you will just learn to ride the wave.
>>
>>24988591
Alright, so here is a non-meme answer. Disregard what I said before, because I was merely jesting.

It has nothing to do with "just don't be depressed" or sucking up to your emotions, this stoic "whatever goes" type is but a stereotype, it's not like that at all.

Buddhism is an attempt to see things for what they are. There are plenty of variants and I won't get into that, but it's basically meditation, correct vision of things and correct actions, surrounded by the philosophical buddhist point of view. We are all subject to what goes on around us, buddhist or not, old and young, rich and poor. The best metaphor for meditation is that of keeping the water still until the dirt falls and it's easier to see through. In this sense, it is about observing how you feel, how you think, your own biases, fears and seeing past them. Meditation can be hard emotionally, you may feel like an asshole for all the bad you've done, that's part of it.

If you're on an empty beach, there is a beautiful sunrise and you sit to meditate, that's wonderful, but that's too easy. Anyone would calm down in this situation. When you are in a car crash and the other guy jumps out of the car to punch you, I don't expect you to be non chalant but if you are able to be 1% calmer than you'd usually be, then you're already doing a much harder work than the """enlightened""" guy at the beach. This is to your benefit and the other guy's as well.

Meditation, correct vision and correct action are practices, it never ends, there is no conclusion, but it's just like training a muscle or a martial arts move. The more you do it, the easier it becomes. You will always be taken by emotions, specially strong ones. Adrenaline, cortisol, serotonine, etc, those regulate how you feel. If you're in a war ridden city or in a five start caribean hotel... that makes a difference. But buddhism is not about those things. When you "get used" to your own mind through buddhism, and can see more clearly your own biases, you take that understanding whetever you go. Although it won't solve all of the problems, it certainly helps navigating them.

that's the idea. being master of your emotions rather than constantly driven by them. you should read Doctrine of Awakening

With (almost) zero fanfair (I had one very blissful experience early on in meditation, which served its purpose of keeping me interested), it eliminated the existential crisis I was in for the first 35 years of life. I didn't become an empty shell without emotions or whatever, in fact that schizoid adaptation was what I had been trying for so long and it kept failing. Rather, I just notice more and more that I am not disturbed by things that suck. Ironically a major part of that is tied to noticing that things do in fact suck.

Have you ever seen someone with road rage or otherwise frothing in anger and it just seems like an insane, alien way of being to you in that moment? Maybe you instinctually let out a laugh? Or a pet you love does something that's silly but harmless and you laugh at that? Buddhism makes me feel that way towards greater and greater amounts of typical human behavior.

Yeah, when my dog wants to bark at the birds he sees out the window and that turns into a whine or strange growl noise, my amusement toward that is very similar to when I see you lonely, trying to fit in with losers online through an ancient retarded from of hate.
