>What is /wng/ — Web Novel General?
A general for readers and authors involved or interested in the growing phenomenon of 'web novels', serialized English fiction posted to websites such as: Royal Road, Webnovel, Scribblehub, Wattpad, Archive of Our Own, Spacebattles, HFY, various personal author websites, and more

>Why read web novels?
Not for prose or tight editing or deep themes, frankly. As a whole, web novels are infamous for content sprawl and pacing issues. If you enjoy having millions of words to sink your teeth into to get to know the world and characters, though, you may be interested. Keeping up with other readers on a weekly basis to discuss the story's events unfolding is another perk, in the same way discussing an ongoing TV show might be.

>Why write web novels?
Ease of access & potential for Patreon earnings. Many successful authors gain an audience on their website of choice and funnel their readers into a Patreon. See graphtreon.com/top-patreon-creators/writing for an idea of what some are earning.
Also, once an author has earned a fanbase, transitioning into an Amazon self-publishing career is several orders of magnitude easier than starting 'dry'.

My new years resolution is simple: Write an original story and write a fanfiction for the sole purpose of engaging in the arts without any sort of profit or clout motivation.
Also to read more just so that I can learn to be a bit more active and less passive like I am when watching videos.
Also fuck tropes.

Guys, I have good news and bad news.

The good news is that I’ve finally surpassed 30k views on Royal Road.

The bad news is that my PC charger literally smoked, I saw smoke with my own eyes. Hence, I ordered a new one, but until January 5th I can’t write a damn thing.
Sorry to my all my fans…

Like how the fuck does it do it?? The patreon is a consistent line up for 6 years straight and it's at like 90,000$ a month. AND STILL GOING UP. And also makes more on amazon than patreon
From everything I've heard it's not even good either. I need a deepslopper to explain. Is it more Saudi Prince shenanigans?

What I got after a bit of back-and-forth feedback
"While the Imperium has been at war with the Confederacy for the past century, war hero Lawrence Mengde has done everything to end it. He yearns to observe history, not shape it. But what can one man do to carve out an everlasting peace in the face of a forever war?

That's why when the Imperium hurls an asteroid fortress towards his capital homeplanet, it prompts Lawrence to question himself his role in this carnage: does he become the very tyrant he spent his life opposing, or does he remain a dutiful soldier, a mere pawn, who could lose everything still dear to him?"

Content with it for now—but more urgently need to go back to chapter 1 and give it a total makeover, push the starting scene further back so it's "page 1 heat of battle, page 2 something goes wrong, page 3 shit explodes and lawrence is surrounded" kinda thing, "back to the premise" essentially more in media-res. I've been refraining from having this scene actually written out—figured it was for the better—but I may have to ultimately. So much pain. The starting line only goes further and further away.
>>
>>24987264
No, Primal Hunter isn't a good research subject because a large part of its success was a matter of early-mover advantage. The market conditions have shifted too much, imitating Primal Hunter 1:1 won't work nowadays.
>>
>>24987269
I don't this holds because other long-runners like DOTF and HWFWM stagnated and fell
PH just keeps going up and up and fucking up
Like clearly early mover is a part of why it's #1 but it's also clearly the paragon of slop
>>
>>24987271
To be more specific, I think the later books of PH are good research material, but not the earlier material. Doing an assfuck long dungeon crawl early on will fuck you over.
>>
>>24987279
Clearly readers don't care that much because it's not pushing many away, not at that consistent ridiculous growth rate
>>
PH is fucking terrible, and he's getting away with it
>>
Is there anything super popular in the RR and adjacent sphere that isn't terrible and getting away with it?
>>
>>24987282
yes, but they WOULD care about it if it wasn't PH
it's the same as vol.1 of Cradle, people power through
>>
>>24987331
Okay but what's so incredibly addicting about PH where even despite the bad start it's the #1 grower and outpaced even other big-name early movers like DOTF and HWFWM? That was the question from the start.
Why is PH in its own tier entirely?
>>
>>24987295
i'm not just saying this out of spite, or for effect, but no; it's literally all terrible. but if i'm being real about it, i don't blame the authors a single bit
>>
why are you guys so obsessed with numbers? write the story you want to write, if 0 people read it then that's fine because at least you enjoyed crafting it
>>
>>24987376
you sound like an idiot, why should i listen to you?
>>
>>24987376
authorial enjoyment doesn't pay for groceries and i would rather chainsmoke myself to death by age 60 churning out hack writing than live to 80 working a wagie job for the jew
>>
>>24987376
this isn't insightful. it's the most boring intro-level discourse ever in art
some people want readers and maybe to entertain the idea of making a living out of their passion. to do so means you need to understand what readers want. so people talk about what readers want, and why they want it. it doesn't mean they're going to mirror 1:1 what they see doing best, just that knowledge is power and analyzing the situation is useful, so you can apply popularity trends to what you personally like to create
i hope to god you're just a newfag and not that annoying anon rehashing this argument out of insecurity or neuroticism for the nth time
>>
>>24987390
and most people writing and selling novels are paying attention to "numbers", doing market research, etc.
>>
>>24987376
The very rare turbo-based artists who are comfortable creating purely for the sake of creating don't make posts like this.
Why are YOU obsessed with numbers, anon?
>>
>>24987376
doing it for enjoyment is fine, while you are working on your chops IE the ability to write passably well. Then you need some meta, so you can get real readers. and thats even if you are just doing it for fulfillment. The final stage is true market analysis. Standard advice for prospective commercial artfags. First learn all the rules. Then you can decide which ones to break. Once you have some kind of fanbase going *then* you can see how your own personal pt ideas float. Yo have initil interest to take look. What would get zero readers as an unknown, can have a chance to get read by people familiar with your work and you have some name value. I swore I'd never do isekai but now that I'm into trying it I'm enjoying it. Its a new type of story from my usual and new type of characters. Trying to go from personal fulfillment/chops stage to some readers stage. but you do you.
>>
My prediction is that this will be the year battle royale, gacha mechanics, and MC simping for the empress/heroine meta make their way to RR.
After all, who the hell still plays MMORPGs nowadays?
