what books are essential to understand more the american mindset? i've been living in the US for the past 4 years and still not part of the culture and i think i will never be and that's ok but if i can indulge myself a little bit more it would be beneficial for me career wise

>part of the culture
America has no culture.

There is no single American culture. Every place is different. But if you insist, consider Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. It made me understand America much more than I initially thought.

That means nothing now. Even naturalized citizens have to be worried. Those born here are also arrested just the same by the border control/ICE. Chile has elected the son of a literal Nazi though.

America is a corporation with so many disconnected groups of people that you can't even talk about a singular "American mindset" anymore. Modern American culture is better learned and understood through tv, film, and the internet.
What few books that could be considered a snapshot of "Americana" are either too dated to be relevant anymore or were written after American culture had become fragmented by immigration to the point of being undefinable and are therefore either out of touch or written specifically about a specific sub-culture.

As has been said already, there are very few topics that have one cohesive "American" perspective. Where are you in the US?

Read a bunch of Philip Roth. The Secret History by Donna Tartt.

5 years ago Less than Zero would've been an uninspired and dated recommendation but it's surprisingly relevant right now
