I see this getting recommended, but the description on wikipedia looks like some commie, hurr ebil oppressor shit.

Maybe it's good besides that, but will I find it insufferable?
>>
>>24990179
It's not commie per se, it's "authoritarianism bad," rebel extremists are frowned upon from book one
Then the sequels show a democratic republic getting easily subverted and eating itself, and the attitude is more "you can't make the world you want, only the world you deserve"
It's not a deeply philosophical series but the characters have enough convictions to morally ground the duels and space battles

Anything like pic rel?
>>
>>24990179
it's about as anti-commie as it gets. it takes an extremely libertarian view of things, and goes on at length about the evils of authority, any system that depresses natural meritocracy, democracy in specific and in general, and even rebellion itself

the oppressors are evil, but their real crime is that they're evil for backward, irrational reasons that are detrimental to themselves as the lower castes

Is there a sex scene with the cute femboy in the middle and the cute tomboy on the right?

Is dune good? Is dune unique? Is there something similar?
>>
>>24990179
It feels like more a critique of democracy at times in the series

Finished Dune 4. Entertaining books and there is some interesting themeing and thought provoking ideas but 70% of the philosophy in this book is just garbage pseudo philosophy, there are entire chapters of Leto discussing how females are better warriors and how it is related to rape and homosexuality. Frank Herbert is more of a shrooms junkey and a sex pervert than a philosopher.

Anyways, my favorite 2 characters are Moneo and Hwi. Money acts all subservient with Leto, all weak and dumb "I dont understand Lord" then he is alone with Duncan and the dynamic totally shifts, he is the smart strong one in that relationship, kinda dickish though, Leto did it out of love when Moneo seems to do it out of spite. Leto does love Moneo the most, last chapters Leto really did try to warm him "Moneo you really need to start thinking for yourself and being independent" Poor dude was just an old model not designed for the new times.

Hwi seems like a subversion of the whore of babylon, so empathic and pure, she will comfort and fuck anything that she looks at. Are we sure she is not a chinese room just designed to say whatever the person in front needs to hear the most?
>>
>>24990452
I remember a cool rebellion plotline that goes nowhere
>>
>>24990465
Leto calls the rebellion dumb and pointless chapter 2. But yeah, Frank doesnt do action, I think he had a concept and idea with the first half of dune but the shroom side of it overtook the plot.

The first trilogy is from the perspective of one character, Darrow. The next trilogy is from the perspectives of Darrow and other characters, many of whom are shit.

How well has the wheel of time aged? Is it still worth reading after going through shit like Malazan, Elderlings, or Bakker’s books

it's hard to say because wheel of time basically had no impact on fantasy at large. nothing else is as padded, I guess?

>>24990695
What sort of autistic rule is that? Plenty of POV books have multiple POV characters. I also found the sequel POVs more interesting than Darrow as well

why are these bundled together again? two totally different (diametrically opposed even) genres-smashed together with no regard for the readers well being. fucking ridiculous really.

Although I'd suggest not checking the movie.

How can you possibly dislike German's hilarious romp?
>>
Finished this and didn't much care for it. First Niven novel I've read. I can appreciate that it may have been treading new ground in 1975, but I think it's aged quite poorly. I like the overall concept of a more advanced alien race, but they are stuck in their system, but ultimately my problem is just that the aliens don't really feel that alien.
When the visit the alien homeworld and it has cars, planes, etc. I kind of mentally checked out.

Dishonored would be a reasonable approach. I'd really want a character action game, but literally the only people capable of making a good character action game are japanese.
>>
>>24990718
First book will feel a bit generic.
Finds its stride from then on out until you get to Winters Heart-Crossroads which are so ball busting meandering and bad it can barely be believed.
Then the Sanderson books dip in quality but at least end the series.

Fantasy is a ridiculously broad and loosely defined genre that arguably includes both SF and horror as sub-categories.
Anything can be 'fantasy' if it has enough 'fantastic elements' in it. And any element can be 'fantastic' if you can argue it doesn't exist in real life.
And a lot of sci-fi is basically indistinguishable from stereotypical fantasy anyway, aside from including some token futuristic 'science' elements like lasers and spaceships. Case in point, Dune.

Only small segments of both horror and SF can be argued to be outside the fantasy sphere. Horror, for example, can be about serial killers, which are realistic and not fantastic. Some of the hardest SF doesn't really deal with futuristic technology or aliens. But these are minority subgenres. Most horror is supernatural, most sci-fi is more technobabble than real science.

This was a very bland book and a disappointing cap to this arc.
Spent a good chunk of my year starting this series and this book did not make it seem worth.
