What's the point of him? So many deride his theories, but yet he is so famous regardless. Psychotherapy was his domain but what did he contribute?

I wasn't even coming after Jung or a Jung well read anymore, but someone clearly caught feelings..

There was a phase in my life where I suffered from chronic insomnia. It got so bad, I thought I would become unable to function, and lose my marbles as well as my job.
At the time (synchronicity alert) I happened to be reading Jung's Psychological Types, in which he opines that neurotic symptoms are the result of an unbalanced personality.
This led me to conclude that I had become too much of a nerd. My job, hobbies and interests were almost all cerebral in nature. I was using my brain so much, I never gave it a chance to switch off.
The solution proposed by Jung was to do less of the things I enjoyed and was good at, and instead cultivate interests that stimulated my under-used psychological faculties (the sensory, the emotional, the social etc.)
It took a while, but in the end I began to sleep better, and have actually become a good sleeper nowadays. I literally cured my potentially catastrophic neurosis by reading Jung.

Oh, and Myers-Briggs tests I guess.

what new interests did you take up?

Young was extremely lucky that his theories applied to folktales, occultism, and mythology. If he was strictly an psycho-analrapist like Freud he would just be just as relevant, with all his theories completely debunked by actual medicine.

freud also used & abused mythology for his theories. and was very relevant until recently.

Art (visual) was a big help. That was like a cattleprod for the emotions. I began to see the worth of art therapy.
It's funny, I'd always thought I was a hardcore music buff, until I realised I had only been playing music in the background lately, and had been leaning towards emotionless, abstract electronica. I forced myself to sit down and give music my full attention, and found I was enjoying it more than I had in years.
Then I started going for long walks, just to look at things and let my mind idle for a while. This did a good job of engaging my senses.
The social side of things has always been my weak point, but I did at least go to bars and have fleeting interactions. I was also banging a sweet hooker at the time, which helped ...

The difference here is that Freud has a theory and then uses one specific myth to try to give it more relevance.
On the other hand, Jung has a theory and all myths simply work with it without the need of Jung's explanation.

>The only interpretation which explains the text is the initiated interpretation, and that depends upon factors as far removed from scholastic attainment as the appreciation of fine art depends upon factors that have no concern with a knowledge of the merely physical constituents of the pigments employed in its production.
