What are the best Illiad and Odyssey translations?
>>24993593I like Lattimore. It sounds the best. Some people will try to sell you on Pope, but he is a Shakespeare worshiper who casts Homer as a Shakespeare fanfic writer
Lattimore or Caroline Alexander.
Heres a comprehensive list of the english translations of homer, the full list is linkedhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_translations_of_Homer
It's always funny when people who don't know Greek (which is approaching 100% of posters on this board) try to attempt to answer questions like this in any kind of meaningful way. As if you know the subtle philological differences that make Lattimore different from Fagles, etc. As if you are in any way fit to judge what translations are "true to the original."OP, ignore the pseuds on this board and just get the normie Fagles, or you can just be a chad and start learning Greek because all intellectual roads lead there anyway.
>>24994070my prof said lattimore's is the best.
>>24994070Ancient greek is very different from Koine or modern Greek, no?
Id want to get one with footnotes to give tidbits I may miss out on
>>24993593I read Fitzgerald and loved it. If I were to reread it, I'd go for Pope, Lattimore or Merrill, they sound the best to me when comparing translations.
I got a Gredos translation, which is supposed to be the best among Spanish translations, yet I still don't know what's going most of the time even though I read each 3 times already
>>24994070>As if you are in any way fit to judge what translations are "true to the original."Nobody is even trying to do that, retard.
