R.F Kwang > R.D Laing.

The Divided Self is interesting, well-written and it's not too long, definitely worth reading. It was recommended to me by an older gentleman in a library when he saw I was reading either Julian Jaynes or Jung for a project. I very much regret being a bit apprehensive towards him at the time because it was a great recommendation. I'd also recommend Madness and Modernism by Louis Sass for more work on schizophrenia and philosophy/art.

Thanks anon. We are trying to choose a book by Laing. Have you read other works of his, and if so, how would you compare The Divided Self to his other works?

Never read The Divided Self but I think his Knots is amazingly original as far as psychology books are concerned. It's a psychiatric examination of relationships in verse.

I own, plan to read it this year.

Yes, or any if his other works

His books are old and no longer relevant.

His idea was that social settings can treat mental illness.

What made him special was that he actually bought a mansion and let nutters with schizophrenia live there... It ended badly, but at least he actually tried to change things.

Kingsley lodge I think it was called.

These days his ideas have been subsumed into modern psychiatry ie psychosocial determinants of health are well appreciated.

OP here. I’m hoping someone could compare and contrast The Divided Self, Laings most famous work, with his second most famous, The Politics of Experience. I’ve done my own reading about both but the anons here usually have some stellar insight.

As a side note, the guy I would be reading this with is an intelligent guy who is fascinated by psychology due to his own personal experiences, but not an avid reader. I, however, am an avid reader, and have read Jung and many Christian psychologists, although if a book gets - incredibly - technical it might be a more difficult trudge than we are ready for. If the book is simply a harder than average book to read, I expect I would be able to help guide him and I forward.
