Why is this book held in such high regard? Its sole purpose seems to be trashing Southern Whites and at times borders on torture porn

It’s another Darl chapter

You answered your own question.
>>
Southern Whites are the most spiritually non-white American archetype.
>>
>>25005380
Even by American standards they are very niggerfied
>>
Why are burgers so embarrassed by the south?
>>
Is Faulkner worth reading at all?
>>
>spiritually non-white
>when they're the most aristocratic culture of any region of the US
>>
>>25005397
I like him. He has good prose.
>>
>>25004583
Genuinely might be the worst book I've read
I don't trust people that tout Faulkner as one of the greats
>>
What the fuck has happened to /lit/? Faulkner is America's greatest writer from the 20th century. As I Lay Dying is amazing. It's like a biblical tale about the dangers of pride and greed. Anse's pride destroys his entire family over a matter of a few weeks. I can't think of one bad Faulkner book I've read except for maybe Soldier's Pay, his first novel.
>>

>>25005380
Guilt cultures and shame cultures can't understand each other. No wonder Latin America and the peripheries of Europe like Faulkner more than the prots of the global north do.
>>
If the South was nuked tomorrow I wouldn't shed a tear tbqhwyf
>>
>>25004583
Too close to home eh, Cleatus?
>>
it's an extremely well written and interesting book that portrays a tragicomic story from a variety of perspectives, each of which are unique, funny and moving and which constantly cause the reader to reframe and consider what they've read before.
for a very short work it's incredibly dense and bears multiple re-readings both to unpick the story and appreciate the details and the language is incredibly rich and beautiful when it needs to be and fascinatingly pared back and sparse when appropriate.
if you hate this book you hate literature
>>
>>25004583
Maybe it is, but I don't think Faulkner hates the south per se. Sure he might have some enmity, but reading his others I don't think it's pure hatred.
>>
>>25004583
Faulkner displays no hatred whatsoever for the Bundrens. The Snopes, on the other hand...
>>
>>25005399
>my family built this town 150 years ago
>town is a broken down tractor next to a gas station that doesn't rotate the hot food
Truly aristocratic
>>
>>25005397
Absalom, Absalom is peak prose.
>>
Quite frankly the worst book I’ve ever read in my life
>>
I wish Sherman had killed them all.
>>
I know nothing about the book.
I do know the band, which has nothing to do with the book as far as I know. Had a new album a few months ago that is decent imo.

You should hear what they think of you.
>>
When you take a step back from it and look at it for the absurd dark tragic comedy it is it’s a work of southern writing genius. Some people don’t seem to “get” it though.

Cope
Southerners are the only americans left who cluster with their british forefathers
Ellis Island trash are not americans
>>
>>25006652
I'm a middle class british man and it hit incredibly close to home

Who cares what some pseuds think?
>>
I read the sound and the fury and it was utter dogshit I genuinely think it's just celebrated because it's propaganda for race commies
>>
>>25004583
Southern white-trash hicks are subhuman and more than deserve any negative portrayal they get in media.
>>
>>25005397
he is my favourite author
>>
>>25004583
That one just went on public domain, it was on the standard ebooks post. https://standardebooks.org/ebooks/william-faulkner/as-i-lay-dying As for why it's held in high regard, it's a well written book from the greatest American author, & so much accessible to read than his other best.
>>
>>25009388
>the greatest American author,
>Faulkner
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHSHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

As the board becomes browner and younger, the new userbase smears shit all over the old landmarks like Faulkner, Pynchon, and DFW that they're incapable of understanding. Sad, but predictable.
>>
As this board becomes less reddit and younger, the new user base rightfully rebukes the pseuds like Faulkner, Pynchon, and DFW that they understand are primarily glazed by millennial manchildren. Sad, but necessary.
>>
>>25009392
If you want us to credit your literary judgment, you might want to reconsider your writing style. You write like a retard.
>>
>>25009054
Don't put yourself down like that.
>>
>>25009392
I honestly have no idea who you would propose in place of Faulkner. My best two guesses are Herman Melville or Henry James. I'd be interested see what happens if you attempt to articulate your thoughts
>>
>>25004620
>has the best prosed chpaters compared to the other characters
>turns out he's fucking insane
I need ot reread this book
>>25006144
Only The Sound and the Fury made it /lit/s top 100 for this year. That should tell you about the state of this board.
>>
>>25004583
>Why is this book held in such high regard?
Because Americans will hold up anything to prevent the English from rightly pointing out the abject lack of great American literature.
>>
>>25010262
>the English
They have one good novelist and its a woman LOL
>>
>>25010280
One exceeds none in every measure.
>>
>>25010262
What a weird and little thing to say. American literature drove 20th century literature post-WWII, but also made major contributions in the pre-WWII era. I honestly don't understand how you can think this unless you're brown or from an irrelevant country with irrelevant writers.
>>
>>25010233
I only read Light in August and it seemed very clear that he liked the South and thought they were very aspirational despite their flaws. You've convinced me though that I need to read MORE Faulkner
