Does literary fiction have any actual criteria beyond "not genre fiction"? And if it can be defined positively, does that not make it a genre itself?
>>25004874Literary fiction is a figment of the publishing industry, that's all.
>>25004874Literary fiction vs genre, art film vs movies, art music vs popular music, these will always be broad and imperfect but the point is art is sold on the artistry and genre/low-art works are sold on some non artistic appeal (a genre the viewer likes, titillation, utility, ect.)
>>25004874A bookstore in my place put literature like soseki kokoro, dostoevsky idiot, and some dickens novels in the same fiction shelf next to your usual tiktok fiction slop. They are ,after all, a fiction and you cant blame people to put fiction (literature) and fiction (slop) in the same fiction shelf
Lmao this is what normies think literary fiction is
>>25004989This. Lit fic is not necessarily devoid of genre, same goes for movies. There are high art genre books and high art genre movies. Some books, such as Never Let Me Go in OPs pic, are lit fic with speculative fiction elements for example. I always just thought of Lit Fic as higher effort writing language-wise, often with more of a prioritization on complex characters and themes, rather than on plot and entertainment.
