What am I in for?
>>
A grabage book beloved solely by performatives
>>
>>25032073
Oh come on it can't be that bad.
>>
A fun but long book.
>>
>>25032067
This is the Man of La Mancha. His fourth wall breaks have got fourth wall breaks. He's got fan-fiction about himself in his own story, which itself is fan-fiction of a story that doesn't even exist. He basically wrote the book on metafiction
>>
>>25032067
You are in for a long journey of someone too based and autistic for this world.

>>25032067
Only the greatest novel of all time
>>
>>25032067

A couple years back, there was some guy who every month would choose a classic book to read and the rest of the board could join in and read with him then discuss the chapters that were assigned to be read for thwt weekend or day. Don Quixote was one of those books and I tried reading along since I did not have a copy of one of the previous books, Blood Meridian.

Anyway, I did not finish the novel because it was just too long. Some parts were actually funny though. Oh and there was a scene or episode where Don Quixkte and his squire, Sancho Panza, were at a village where one of the village maiden was actually pretty beautiful. She turned down the advances of a simp/incel and the guy committed suicide to try and guilt trip her. It did not work and she rebuked him even after he had died if I remember correctly.

>>25032103

Yep.
>>
>>25032067
A great book that could’ve been half as long
>>
>>25032067
NEET who loves marvel comics so much he goes out in a cheap spiderman suit to try to be a superhero but in the meantime he meets real life every day heros around him and learns deeper truth about justice and the human condition
>>
>>25032067
Just saying there's a part 1 and part 2 to the book, part 2 being published 10 years after the first part. I read part 1, then read part 2 a year later. I quite enjoyed the whole thing but it's already long reading just half of it in one sitting. I probably would've tired out if I hadn't done it that way

I cannot be thy rival, for thy fame
And prowess rise above all rivalry,
Albeit both bereft of wits we go.
But, though the Scythian or the Moor to tame
Was not thy lot, still thou dost rival me:
Love binds us in a fellowship of woe.

Can any anons comment on the comparison between Don Quixote and Dead Souls?
Listening to DS audiobook and having a good time. Wondering if I should bump DQ on the listening list.
>>
>>25032073
I only read the wishbone version when I was a kid.
>>
>>25036440
Well, let's see. They both start with the letter D. Let me guess, you need more?
>>
>>25032067
from what i remember in highschool, its a parody of the most common kind of book at the time, knight stories. the main character is a walking exaggeration.
im sure you were taught in school that any work of art takes on a deeper meaning when you learn of the context it was created in, this book is particularly context dependent. reading quijote without studying the context would be like reading the bible as if it was the lord of the rings.
>>
>>25036440
I’m on Chapter 3 of Dead Souls and was getting Don Quixote vibes. They both have the “ironic hero” thing going on.
>>
>>25036509
it's parody on romanticism itself
>>
>>25036551
i dont know enough to agree or disagree so ill have to study...
>>
>>25036551
Don Quixote is extremely romantic. It also parodies adventure and romance. You can’t really box it into a genre.
>>
>>25032444
Metafiction is gayer than Freddie Mercury.
>>
>>25036642
And you’re gayer than both.
>>
>>25036649
Nothing is as gay as metafiction. Sorry.
>>
>>25036707
Fair enough, anon.
>>
>>25032067
It's shockingly modern. The meta elements, the humor and gags, the dialogue, the irony, it all holds up so well that it actually is spooky. Have humans really not changed that much in 400 years?

It's really excellent. It's overly long and not every arc hits, and by the end Cervantes was ready to be done and it shows. But well worth the read
>>
>>25033643
And then in part 2 he becomes a lolcow and people follow him around with their cellphones hoping he does something stupid and sometimes even tricking him for more content until everyone gets bored and moves on
>>
>>25036886
The parts near the end where they start speaking of the other fake Don Quixote made me realize how Monty Python and the Holy Grail was 400 years behind the curb
>>
>>25036886
>Have humans really not changed that much in 400 years
If you read poets from many centuries ago you will believe this. Maybe in English it's harder, because of changes in pronunciation, which already make a reading like Milton difficult not to say even further back in time.
In my experience, I was surprised by just how modern Renaissance poets, people who lived and wrote and thought 600 years ago, came across in their writings. It's not just that they felt the same we feel, but they also express it in the same way we would. It's hard to get this point across, but if you know what I mean you'll agree...
not to say it gets really kino when you read a 14th century poem and go "yup... it's me"
>>
>>25036886
cervantes just discovered how to write a bloody good story and everything else fell away
>>
>>25036509
truly you do not need to "study" the context, that being stories of knights errant, to understand and thoroughly enjoy Don Quixote. Stories of knight errantry and the knowledge that many found them too indulgent and took themselves far too seriously is all you need to know. There's your context - now you're ready to begin reading
>>
>>25037638
very northamerican viewpoint. you'd rather not take ten minutes to look over a wikipedia page :/ lameeeeee
>>
>>25032067
Slop.
>>
>>25037667
>I need to read about what a knight errant is even though it's self explanatory, not to mention hundreds of pages of the novel are spent describing selected exploits of theirs in detail. I'm a researcher!
>>
>>25037987
why are u so aggressive, did u have a bad week?
>>
It's a comedy, but really it's a tragedy.
>>

how very feminine of you
>>
>>25038055
and you interpret me dishonestly too, man u need a cold glass of water and a hug
>>
>>25038058
you're upset because your original point telling everyone they really need to research some "context" before tackling this has been proven to be retarded so you are now resorting to ad hominin insults.
>>
>>25038055
>>25038064
Anon seems like a nice dude, but you’re a cunt.
t. the 4 chan police
>>
for those who've read the book, what do you think of Man of La Mancha? I see a lot of "Cervantes would hate this interpretation" but I don't particularly care because I love the message of the beauty and power of (even delusional) idealism, fighting for what you believe in even when the entire world thinks you're a retard, etc. I'm planning to read the book soon, just wondering how jarring of a difference it will be
>>

>>
>>25038104
Valid criticism is not whining. (You) whine like a cunt.
>>
>>25037638
You might not need to study the context to enjoy it, but you should definitely read a copy with good footnotes
>>

>>
>>25038152
What the fuck are you blathering about you braindead retard? You have not validly criticized anything I've said. There has been one criticism and that was me telling tard #1, whose first contribution to this thread was
>erm well I don't really remember the book but make sure you "study context beforehand"
And me explaining, no, that's moronic and a waste of time. Just dig into this masterpiece and enjoy
And we have since had zoomers sperging at me for no reason. But hey, gayboys really do stick together I guess
>>
>>25038180
>”What the fuck are you blathering about?”
>proceeds to blather
You think I’m reading all that, whiny cunt?

you both sound like retards

>>
>>25038446
ok. so what did u think of the book? what was ur favourite part?
>>
>>25038451
I love it, it's one of my favorite books. I consider Cervantes to be a genius which is not at all what I was expecting.
I was simply chiming in to encourage people to pick it up and read it. And persevere, it's not too long and really quite a joy. Cervantes holds your hand firmly and steadily throughout, no prior knowledge needed
>>
>>25038468
>not at all what I was expecting
what were u expecting?
>>
>>25038171
Its bold of you to assume I did anything even remotely interesting enough for people to be mildly amused at me.
>>
>>25032067
Havent actually read, but is cervantes actually mean to chivalric romances? I like them.
>>
>>25038663
There are subplots that show he really loves them. The main plot pokes fun at them.
>>
i love it desu
>>
>>25032067
The first part is amazing literature of the highest order. The second is far inferior and likely a fraud.

Anons, should I read the original version in Spanish, or should I just read the modern version?
>>
>>25032067
I'm looking for a particular edition.

The story is great. Sure, is making fun of men who dreamed of becoming heroic knights, but that's why is so remembered.
Quixote was an idiot, simply put. But he dreamed, and tried to live that life.
He was honest and kind, and he attempted to become a hero.
Did he fail? Probably. But he was earnest and honest with himself, and everyone around him.
In fact, this showed up in my TV back when I was a kid, when my school gave me the book, and I feel it captures that vibe: a stupid but honest man, trying to reach for the stars.
Was he stupid because we failed, or are we because we gave up, even before starting? I feel that's the reason we remember Quixote, even after all this time.
Windmills and possible incest aside.

>>
>>25032067
Genuinely hilarious story about a guy who consumed so much capeshit that he brainwashed himself into believing capeshit was real life and he’s the protagonist. Comic mischief aside, there are some really interesting characters and ideas presented from time to time that can help broaden your worldview.
>>
>>25032524
It's a romance not a novel retard.
>>
I've read The Count of Monte Cristo, it's time to read a second similar film.
