>Dazai—drowned himself
>Mishima—seppuku
>Akutagawa—suicide by overdose
>Kawabata—gassed himself
Why did all four of the best modern Japanese writers commit suicide?

Japanese society hates thinkers and individualists. Even if the authors didn’t subscribe to individualism they certainly were born with that inclination. If you’re a thinking man, Japan can offer respite for a time. You are allowed to stop thinking and just do things there. You can indulge in a lot of hedonism if you’re quiet about it. You cannot be seen by your peers or worse the public, as someone who thinks differently than the herd. There are few people like that in the open there and less than in any of their lifetimes. The loneliness is exhausting and ideation of ending it all makes near-sense. Mishima was an overdramatic faggot who led a failed coup, thus he was a little different than the others.

Dazai was a hack, get him out of there. Yumeno Kyūsaku died young but he didn't commit suicide

They had a fundamental problem that started with post-war Japan.
>Japan’s diet shifted dramatically after World War II: from a rice-based, low-protein, largely traditional cuisine before the war to a more diversified, Western-influenced diet with higher intake of meat, dairy, and processed foods in the postwar era. This transformation was driven by food shortages, U.S. occupation policies, and long-term modernization.
It was due to the food shortage, they were probably eating other things and got depressed because of it. Food changes how people think and behave in a lot of ways. Maybe the only exception to this is Mishima, but he was kinda nuts in his own.

I recently made a new translation of the Mishima biopic, you can find it on Soulseek under my current username "Rrobynne Mk. II". The officials subtitles are a totally alternate script that diverges into different topics entirely to what the Japanese actors' dialogue is speaking about. I don't just mean dubtitles, I mean literally an alternate script. There's a whole different movie in there.

modern japan is nihilistic. many of their best artists are as such. Ozu Yasujirou had inscribed on his grave only 無.
their religion is still in the ancient polytheistic nature worship phase. and there's buddhism, but that essentially affirms those nihilistic, collectivist tendencies.
any attempt to introduce some real life-affirming hope (namely Christianity) has been suppressed (either by feudal state governments, or by the U.S. genociding its practitioners with the nukes - Nagasaki being the home of Christianity in Japan, and Hiroshima being home to a number of notable Christian nips, including its mayor. it was on a rise among many public intellectuals until then.)
so what is an intelligent person supposed to believe in their spiritual backdrop? the superstition won't do, buddhism will further withdraw them, and christianity is for gaijin in weird hats, and as far as they're concerned gaijin in weird hats are why japan is so fucked (a misunderstanding of course, those gaijin wear smaller hats and hate the others.)

Nothing wrong with being a manlet.
Being a manlet making chuddy face dramatically taking low angle shot of yourself flexing though is a bit… it’s just a bit.

This. Hemingway is a western example, extremely sensitive man who compensated with machismo.
