I just got laid off. I have a fair bit of runway, so not super worried, but the job market's bad right now. They gave me a month's severance so that's nice. Going to take about a week to read and then get on the hunt. Gonna get snowed in this weekend. Couldn't find any flashlights in the store, so went with a bunch of unscented candles + cans of soup. Need to put sheets on my bed. GF just got her wisdom teeth out, so I'm bringing her soup and ice cream.

Seems like contemporary US fiction's in two main camps -- the first is mainstream identitarian trauma plot stuff, books titled shit like "The Littlest Husband's Brother" or "Big Bright World," which prioritizes 'poetic' prose, long investigations of marginalized identity, straight realism or a kind of airy realism sprinkled with strange coincidences, etc. The second general kind of fiction is this self-consciously strange, flat-affect, long studies of alienation, titled shit like "Dark Retroflex" or "Facets and Strife," which draws heavily on critical theory and tries postmoderny-flavored commentary on society. I think of the second as almost post-Lishian in this weird way -- the "sentence" as aesthetic unit deemphazied in favor of the complete, the whole as the aesthetic object presented for consideration -- but haven't super thought that out yet. (Still waiting on someone to write the long book on Lish's acolytes/influence. Lots to discuss there.)

Maybe I'll catch up on poetry. I'm about ~10 years out of date there.

Still got a lot of classic shit to read -- War and Peace, Genji, some Balzac, Chekhov's stories, Dostoevsky, George Eliot, Kafka -- alongside some modern/contemp classics, like Joy Williams, Pynchon, Deborah Eisenberg, Lydia Davis, Clarice Lispector. So not sure what I'll do. Right now I'm trying to finish Garielle Lutz's complete stories. I think /lit/ would like her. Used to write under Gary Lutz, think it's a tranny situation. (I don't really care about trannies. If they can write they can write.) Hope /lit/ is doing well. Been fantasizing about fucking picrel from The Pitt.

My Dad kinda fucked me, he lent me a very damaged 1st edition copy of The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever Book One and the cover fell off. Now he's pissed at me and I was wondering if there's an fairly good conditioned hardback book I could get of it. I googled around and I can't really find anything that's aesthetically pleasing and I don't want to buy the one with the phoned in picture of a ring cover.

I hate "x as y" style sentences like this
>War and Peace, Genji, some Balzac, Chekhov's stories, Dostoevsky, George Eliot, Kafka
you can cut this way down if you only read books written originally in english
>If they can write they can write.

I feel metaphysically assured that AI will never be able to displace literature, however it represents an intensification of the tendency to swamp out and stymie original long term thought. Generative AI wants to swamp out all original thought in an effort to reinforce the status quo through sheer quantity. In that respect it is truly pernicious and metaphysically evil, but this reflects more the perfidious power structures behind it rather than the technology itself.

Inside the house's spacious corridor, sat on a leather armchair was seen a wasted man convulsed from hour to hour by a tenacious and deep cough. The medic, a european savant, administered him a soothing concoction, and two old soldiers, that in silence and melancholy paced around the lounge, dutifuly approached the corridor.

Rather than a sick man,the matter was now of a dying man; a dying man of immortal renown.

Having overcome a strong fit, the patient submerged himself in profound meditation, and some minutes later he said with a feeble voice:

—Do you know, doctor, what torments me as I feel myself nearing the grave?

—No, my General.

—The idea that perhaps I may have built upon the sands and tilled the sea.

And a sigh escaped from the most intimate corner of his soul, and he sank back into meditation.

Having passed a long time, the saddest smile drew itself on his face, and said he slowly:

—Do you not guess, doctor, who have been the world's three most eminent fools?

—Certainly not, my General.

—Come closer, doctor... I will whisper it to your ear... The three greatest fools have been Jesus Christ, Don Quixote, and... me.

I wonder what female desire feels like for women. For some reason I can't fathom women ever being able to fathom what male desire feels like. I know they are made of flesh and blood just like men are, but something in me can't imagine a woman ever being able to understand its sheer physical and mental intensity. Could a woman ever be driven to the precipice of insanity by lust like mentally weak men regularly are? Do they ever resent being perpetually hounded by this physical and mental hunger for the opposite sex? Do they know that aching knot-like sensation somewhere above their taint?

I return from my four hour long training as a clerk at a local convenience store completely crushed, the grey weather only serving to heighten the still desolation I feel inside, the smell of cheap coffee and nicotine hanging on my clothes. I pitiful boy of 30, for I have no done anything in my life to yet deserve being called a man, and still this morsel is too much for me to swallow. I dare not spurt even this pathetic, measly, rotten branch for I have stayed from any work for some years now and I fear how deep the cave can go. Just four hours were enough to drive me nearly to mad tears and yet I'm supposed to accept I will be working eight long hour shifts five times in the week. Mortified is how I feel, there is no acceptance withing me, I lash and throw myself at the wall internally but still I know the wound will only grow bigger.

You think if arabs could all shrink themselves down to a few mm tall they would do it? My sister keeps buying dubai chocolate crap for some reason. I was thinking if in a few years they really wanted to improve dubai chocolate they could invent shrinking technology to put little chefs on the chocolate and sculpt it at a micro level. If they closed off saudi arabia from outsiders and shrink everyone down to a few mm it would be the biggest country in the world relative to the size of the inhabitants, and they could sell bespoke microchocolates for way more money to discerning palates. I never felt a call towards any religion but that of the flesh.

The platonic ideal of women is the only idea that ever inspired something resembling religious reverence and awe in me. Though fortunately I know better than to confuse the ideal with the real.

Still, I have no need for intangible, otherworldly gods when there are women that I could love and be loved by here and now. It is them that mother Nature meant men to concern themselves with, not some abstract Unmoved Mover.

Unfortunately, I don't think I'd be able to finish my degree without the chemical help at this point (mathematics is literally 100% a mental discipline), so I'm sort of cucked into doing it, or at least trying it. If you don't meditate and have some kind of spiritual awakening by 33, you will turn grey inside and become undead, just a corpse walking around, "supporting the economy" for younger people who can still see and feel in color. But younger people have no control over their technicolor emotions, and even their pineal glands are already 50% hardened since their early teens, which is when the world ceases to be a "blooming buzzing confusion" and ossifies into skeletal structures. At thirteen the world is still alive with color, at twenty three the colors are beginning to fade and die, at thirty three you are colorblind, unless you find the wheel and start to captain your own ship. The world is an engine that burns old people's sleepwalking work hours to pay for the play of the young.

Northrop Frye says in volume 13 or so of Denham's edition of his papers that youth isn't more alive, it's just more volatile. The energy isn't contained so it spills out in all directions. As you age, it gets harnessed and directed. Instead of an ocean of potential energy doing nothing and only acting via brownian motion and erosion, it can focus its energy into a stream and go where it likes. But this is only true for people like Frye, who seriously studied gnosticism and yoga and created his own bootleg praxis for completing the process described in Enneads 1.6. Most people just turn the world into a machine whose levers they understand how to operate, by turning themselves into a machine for operating those levers. They turn energy into mass for creating a suit of armor to contain their energy, but it becomes an empty suit that "drives to work," works, and drives back. Even their pleasures are mechanical. Money from work buys parceled out bits of nostalgia, memories of when they still saw childish things in color. 99% of the human race is either a child fingerpainting while it still can, or an old man in a hospice, looking at his old fingerpaint drawings while a memory of a memory of once spontaneously wanting to fingerpaint slips through his fingers like sand.

We've lost true adulthood, true manhood and womanhood. You can't remain a child and you can't mourn live in the tatters. "When I became a man, I put away childish things." True adulthood is meant to be a second youth, a new spring, not the mausoleum and winter of one's first youth. Every day should be filled with joy. Maturity shouldn't kill youth, it should challenge and negate it, and then this negation should in turn be negated in a higher synthesis.

We are drowning in a muddled mess of contradicting definitions that seemingly shift in meaning ad hoc between statements and soundbytes and the grand majority of people have absolutely no idea of how to navigate it, Our common language is so broken down that we can barely communicate with each other.

It's bizzare to me of how many people insist upon throwing themselves into nuanced political or philosophical discourse, attacking complex arguements, when it's more than clear that they don't have even understand either their own position or the argument of the person they claim to attack.

Inner light can always shine through the clouds of the ego at any time. I'll grant that overtime the clouds can propagate to seemingly insurmountable levels when left undisturbed, but I heavily disagree that such an awakening has such an arbitrary time-limit.

And for that alone, I deem you a person devoid of worthwhile understanding. Revise your efforts if you want keener eyes to glance at the rest of your deluge of effort

From what i've read so far the aim of the idea of Zhengming, in context, seems to be in establishing political legitimacy.
I don't know enough about confuscianism to truly agree or disagree, so please feel free to correct me.

To be fair I may not have gotten my point across all that well and so to clarify, what I am trying to ge across is that public discourse suffers when people use the same terms with different meanings or shift meanings mid argument. Pluralistic meanings do infact exist but in debates both participants should either explicitly define the terms being used during or acknowledge the fact of difference in sense and context to the defintions being used. Otherwise productive dialogue isn't really possible.

Zhèngmíng (正名), or the "Rectification of Names." Literally means: correct (正) name (名). Zhengming in context is more that a gentlemen should speak right and do right, and thus his actions will slowly ripple out into society for the moral improvement of it. Confucius didnt have much faith in commoners should expected political rulers to lead the way with Zhengming, so you're partly right in that regard

Analects 13.3
>Zilu asked, “If the Duke of Wei were to employ you to serve in the government of his state, what would be your first priority?”

>The Master answered, “It would, of course, be the rectification of names.”

>Zilu said, “Could you, Master, really be so far off the mark? Why worry about rectifying names?”

>The Master replied, “How boorish you are, Zilu! When it comes to matters that he does not understand, the gentleman should remain silent.

>“If names are not rectified, speech will not accord with reality; when speech does not accord with reality, things will not be successfully accomplished. When things are not successfully accomplished, ritual practice and music will fail to flourish; when ritual and music fail to flourish, punishments and penalties will miss the mark. And when punishments and penalties miss the mark, the common people will be at a loss as to what to do with themselves. This is why the gentleman only applies names that can be properly spoken and assures that what he says can be properly put into action. The gentleman simply guards against arbitrariness in his speech. That is all there is to it.”

>To be fair I may not have gotten my point across all that well and so to clarify,

she hated herself. her vile desperation smelled revolting, a smell so strong it repelled the good. oh daddy why aren't you there to protect me from these bad men, don't you want the best for your oldest daughter? don't you care? show me you care. yell at me. instead she was eating breakfast in a shitty diner at the edge of campus with a boy who was looking right through her, the only witness to bear an overweight waitress and the dwarf that worked at her local grocery store she made eye contact with at least once a week. he would frequently publicly masturbate on the bus with no one so much as batting an eye. people would see him jerking his deformed penis and feel pity instead of disgust. he lived alone with only the company of his sister, who had grown to resent him, he'd see once a week to clean his filthy apartment, and the rats that lived in his walls. he had experimented with different ways of torturing them. he only knew how to feel an extreme violence, everything else left him feeling numb. he would snap their necks and take out their organs to lay them flatly on his bedside table for decor. he touched himself with cold hands stinking of rat faeces to ejaculate. he hated the world despite having such a loose definition or conceptualization of what hate actually was. what he knew was nobody other than himself had touched him or would, and all he wanted was to be touched. don't confuse touch for love, he was a disgusting beast who would beat a woman into rape given the chance, his mind so simple he did not see sex as something to be experienced but taken. this wasn't his fault though. “I'm not much hungry anyways can we get out of here?”

I was talking more directly about semantics in the context of philosophical or political discourse and you seem to refering to normative ethics (as Confucius is from what I understand) with a sort of rhetorical defense of aristocratic hierarchy. Alhough I may just be misinterpreting your intentions.

I know. You immediately reminded me of Socrates complaining about the sophists twisting words in order to win their arguments, devoid of rigor or intellectual merit. Like Gorgias famously did in his defense of Helen.
We are looking at the same problem, my mind merely wandered towards a solution hence my clear difference in perspective. Right speech comes from right intentions. You can not expect to have a honest conversation on a political or philosophical subject without both participants being infused with a moral outlook.

Language is just guttural sound we attached meaning to, words and definitions mean nothing in isolation. It is only when people decide to play the language game, as Wittgenstein called it, with sincere intention, that progress can be made. No amount of analytical philosophy, semantic rigor or agreed upon framework of definitions help, if the participants goal is the 'win' the game of rhetoric, through tricks and semantic loopholes. The game of language is a teamgame, meant to played cooperatively, and nothing will be achieved if everybody is playing solo trying. Hence a moral foundation is essential, I would argue. Knowledge and behavior trickles down in society, so if those at the top decided to play fairly then they are more likely to inspire others to do same is all I'm suggesting. But it is not essential. There are many roads to the appreciation of Truth, and I sure didnt need no aristocratic hierarchy to find mine.

>Again, this seems to be rhetorical.
Perchance, mayhaps, it depends what way you are looking at it ;)

I always knew that, eventually, my father would die, but it's been more than 3 weeks, and I still can't believe he's gone.
Sometimes I forget he's dead, and want to talk to him, only to remember what happened, and feel miserable again. I miss him so much. Even we were somewhat close, I feel guilty for not spending more time with him, or because I couldn't help him. He committed suicide. I think I know what led him to do it. He had been unemployed for a while, was getting sick and old, and once told me, a couple days before, that he felt like a burden to the family. I tried to help him find a job, and told him that he wasn't a burden to any of us, but he wouldn't listen. I never saw him cry, and was rarely visibly sad, but lately, during these last few months, he drank heavily, more than he did before, and did nothing but watch TV all day. Whenever I asked if there was something wrong, he would just joke, or avoid the topic. Wish I could have done more.

I don't think blacks are capable of mentally moving on from the fact that White men enslaved their ancestors; the taught social climate of black people being the natural pray of Whites hasn't helped. Just a profoundly underdeveloped and conditioned group that has no place in civilized society. Thankfully people seem to be waking up!

I'm referring to African Americans. With African emigrants to America, there's a good chance that their home country was colonized by Europeans, but even if not, naturally all blacks are going to be affected by what happened.

i watched ufc for the first time in years last night and wow it's so fucking boring. i was thinking about the punch stats from some fights. one fight had 20 "significant strikes" per fighter in a five minute round. boxing will have like 50 punches per fighter in a three minute round. ok, in ufc maybe there is one takedown attempt a round?

mma/ufc is the worst of both worlds. the strike volume is way way lower than boxing or muay thai cuz the fighters are shook of getting taken down, but the grappling is boring as hell too because they know if they just lay there long enough the ref will stand them up, so compared to a jiu jitsu tournament where the competitors have to be constantly moving, its super low activity. i remember the ufc was exciting maybe 15 or 20 years ago when the fertita brothers still owned it, but maybe it was just novelty? i don't know. all i know is it's not an interesting sport to watch because four minutes out of a five minute round will be the fighters avoiding engaging with each other.

maybe part of the problem is the octagon. in boxing and muay thai eventually one fighter will walk the other one down and trap him in the corner, but in a circular "ring" they can just keep running and circling each other forever. dana white is still the ceo. he built the ufc into what it is. he's going to have to do something to keep it interesting cuz right now it's fucking awful.

>he Third Symphony is Mahler’s hymn to the natural world and his longest work. It was largely composed in the summer of 1895 after an exhausting and troubling period that pitched him into feverish creative activity. Bruno Walter visited him at that time and as Mahler met him off the ferry Walter looked up at the spectacular alpine vistas around him only to be told: "No use looking up there, that’s all been composed by me."

damn

>Mahler was inspired by the grandeur around him at the very deepest level of feeling and also by visions of Pan and Dionysus. In fact by a sense of every natural creative force in the universe infusing him into "one great hymn to the glory of every aspect of creation", or, as Deryck Cooke put it: "a concept of existence in its totality."

It’s all joyless and miserable, but even worse, it’s so repetitive and predictable. 4chan is not a living culture anymore. It used to generate new memes and in-jokes at a consistent rate. That’s all over. Maybe it’s been over for a long time. But I just don’t get anything out of it anymore,
>Don’t forget: you’re here forever
Yeah, yeah. But shame on me if I continue to subject myself to this trash I despise.

Something I've noticed about this board specifically is that the conversation is a lot more relaxed and loose compared to, for example, 2013 or so. Anons on this board used to be so anal and 90% of the threads would be about the same English literary canon books. There's a much bigger variety of books being posted now, and anons seem to take the discussion less seriously than they used to, which ironically makes for better quality discussions.

I'm creating a story setting in which there is a secret government organization that employs mind readers. I randomly had the idea in the shower and decided to sketch out what it might look like and then ran with it from there. It's surprisingly fun, I haven't done anything creative like this since middle school. Right now I'm building a set of regulations and policies that it would use and next I'll make a budget breakdown.

I have an idea for a story about two girls who are best friends. Gradually, one of the girls starts to get upset with the other since she thinks she's too emotional and clingy, so she starts to ignore her and eventually the two grow distant. The clingy girl is obviously devastated, but she manages to get over it and even starts talking to other people. In the end things end up reversed, and the other girl comes crawling back and begging for them to be friends again. They're not lesbians or anything, I just find dysfunctional relationships between girls cute.

I am a slacker god.
I've barely done any work since returning from vacation 3 weeks ago.
I'm not lazy, when I have work I work hard. However I try my best to avoid work. I pretend to be busy and dodge whenever work is being dished out.
It's not all great, you get that feeling you get when you're wasting time. Seems like a waste of life. But then again I just want to screw around online like I'm doing now.

I should have never moved to the office. I was happy working with my hands.
>>
>>25046308
I used to be like you; made 80k a year working 3 days a week and most of my "work" was meaningless bullshit. Then I moved to a small town for my wife, actually tried as hard as I could doing an impossible hell job at a small business for less than half, and was terminated without notice for tenuous reasons that were never explained to me, that will cripple their organization entirely (one partner at another office who was my direct boss was BY FAR the worst manager I have ever seen).

Appreciate what you have. I used to eat fancy pasteries in a giant office building and spent most of my time drinking coffee or getting high out front. Easy come, easy go.
>>
>>25046318
I wish i was making that much. I'm making enough to provide for a stay at home wife and two kids but I don't save much at the end of the month.

>>25046469
What's depressing about that? Dude is having a chill in the bathtub, eating pizza, living his best life. You could go do that right now and feel like that man as you close your eyes and feel the sweet sweet nicotine take a day off your life for 10 minutes of freedom.
>>
>>25046475
first of all the pizza looks awful. but i think it’s something in my bones. i’d never enjoy that the way he does. it made me think: in the UK the biggest night out anthems are:
mr brightside
you’re not alone (https://youtu.be/s4oZdUV-G-Y?si=n3gL-6MPxqQtReZm)
gigi - l’amour toujours https://youtu.be/w15oWDh02K4?si=6a_1WKaG79gXEA6o

there’s a sad element. a bleakness that we enjoy. the UK party scene is nothing like america where we’re content to throw
back ‘brewskis’. we have something in us. a sadness that feels true. some sort of strength that is better than happiness.
>>
>>25046461
Cool but you cant really compare our stories
Mines was a vision realizing i will lead a life of a solitary wolf and you just saw a stray cat. But it wasnt just a regular cat, it was a *_South London_* cat
>>
>>25046501
think you’re fixating on the wrong points
>>
>>25046498
Man has three types of pizza, who cares if it's good? It's about enjoying the small luxuries you have and the moments between the mayhem with what's around you, Mr. Wolf on a hill. Where the fuck am I going to get a hill? Where am I going to get mist? I can absolutely sit in my bathtub, much like I can smoke a dart drunk in the dark without getting all friggity fucked about it.

Also, not American. I dont drink "brewskis". And I'm literally a nihilist, but I'm not sad about it. Why be sad? A smoke is nice. I have smokes. And I'm not french.
>>
>>25046533
>dart
canadian?
& you can be a wolf on a fogbound hillside while standing outside a pub (in your own mind). i wasn’t being literal. it’s hard to explain. phillip larkin said ‘deprivation is to me what daffodils were for wordsworth’. that isn’t exactly what i’m saying but it comes close. it’s a very uk thing i think. dancing not despite the sadness but with it.

was about to agree with this sentiment before i saw it was the turn-of-the-century bad abstract (/impressionist) art anon coming back to claim the throne
>>
>>25046547
Yup, full blooded leaf. And I've seen wolves. In fact, I just finished shoveling 2 feet of snow off my stupidly long driveway in -20c with no gloves. Canadians are a bit different, we recognize shit's fucked, make a dark joke, and push through because it can always get worse, so you might as well enjoy having the smoke, being drunk; it's fleeting and come monday morning when you need to risk your life driving through a blizzard, no frogbound wolves on bleak hills are going to get you out of a ditch.
>>
>>25046583
if push comes to shove, i probably prefer canadians to yanks (& you had a very good music scene ten years ago), but the difference is pretty minimal (this opinion is exacerbated by your response here).
>>
>>25046593
We're basically the same thing, no sweat. The biggest difference is a thin patina of good will over an icy fist; an American might be hospitable, might stab you in the back, but a Canadian hates you and will talk shit the second you violate any of the 69000 imaginary social rules.

Anyways, your point about pubs and wolves and smokes is moreso I take a modernist approach and view smoking as a leisure activity from a pragmatic point of view. I smoke because it reminds me that I will die. It's a trade with the old guard. It's to be savoured, and as I rub elbows with the now-defunct Blood God with the 17 letter name, we both laugh and remember a time where things were worse, when things were better, then enjoy the fact we can still enjoy anything at all. He used to have temples of skulls, I used to have dreams and ambitions, but here we are at a dive bar stumbling into the night.
