It's interesting to consider that science fiction can achieve the status of "real" literature somewhat regularly but fantasy can't. Infinite Jest is technically a sci-fi story. So is A Canticle For Leibowitz. But in terms of fantasy that's considered big-boy literature, it's Tolkien and... maybe Robert E. Howard? Maybe? Certainly none of the contemporary fantasy writers are considered "real" writers on the level of somebody like Don DeLillo.
Magical Realism is just fantasy. Marquez, Rulfo etc.
bait post but I have nothing else to do right now so>>25041334no it isn't. magical realism has some elements of 'magic' inserted into an otherwise normal world and treated more or less like it's normal. in fantasy, magic is the whole conceit and everything hinges on how that mechanic operates.>>25041081sci fi is genre fiction just like horror, romance, mystery, and fantasy, and suffers from the same issues as the others in that it rarely checks all the boxes of what makes great literary fiction. while by definition it may be more conducive to a discussion of broader philosophical issues, it often does so to the detriment of believable, nuanced characters and human relationships. just because it makes you feel smarter doesn't make the work great. there is very little of either genre on the /lit/100 and similar rankings, and even in your post you are already resorting to 'well ackshually infinite jest is _technically_ a sci fi story' because you know people don't think of it primarily as science fiction but you need to have more evidence on your end of this inane argument, much like how the above poster is trying to take credit for magical realism. tl;dr dune and the lord of the rings have a lot more in common with each other than either does with finnegan's wake or the count of monte cristo. stay in your lane, kids.
>>25041368Infinite Jest IS sci-fi. It takes place in a fictionalized future setting and relies on a technological Macguffin (the Entertainment) to drive its plot. That it is also a very literary story does not preclude it being sci-fi.
