might be the weed, but was watching rambo reboot 2008, and it sucked.

spoiler below:
Having long-since abandoned his life as a lethal soldier, John Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) lives a solitary life near the Thai border. Two weeks after guiding a missionary (Julie Benz) and her comrades into Burma, he gets an urgent call for help. The missionaries have not returned, and although he is reluctant to embrace violence again, Rambo sets out to rescue the captives from the Burmese army.spoiler stop.

so my challenge:
find a movie or book plotb that sucked,post the synopsis,. Why it sucked, then post plot changes recommendations.

Ok, I think this is a good thread idea regarding writing, specifically for those of us, that write fiction. but this could also be an opinion thread on movies and other stories that just didn't do it for you.

RAMBO Reboot:
Regarding the Rambo reboot movie, I thought the movie was convoluted with plot holes. Time was the main issue. Vietnam war ended in 1972, that would put the Rambo reboot character at above 50 years old at least. Since the character was in his mid 20's in the Rambo 1 movie, and since Army Special Forces require some time to become expert at it, I would place Rambo at a conservative age of 25 years at the time of the Rambo and Sherrif interaction, so the Rambo reboot character is absolutly a boomer, aged but physically honed. Another thing that the reboot lacked was more back story and screen time with the female character. Paper thin female hostage.

MY Changes. I would make the Rambo reboot into a flash back movie, with Rambo being a missionary, married to the female lead in the movie talking to the camera about how they met and how rambo is better and more normal now. Either a missonary line plot, or perhaps, Rambo runs a troubled youth program. I think the church angle works with the reboot plot.


So I'll take your critisisim and ideas on my plot changes, and please contribute your changes to movies and stories that did not sit well with you.

'The Idiot' from Fyodor Dostoevski

(Plot synopsis)

Prince Liev Michkin, a good-natured individual with a very sickly condition that makes him prone to seizures, is in medical treatment in Switzerland when he receives a message stating that he must return to Russia to inherit his family's wealth. In doing so, Michkin is embroiled in the degenerate affairs of the russian elite in St. Petersburg, particularly when he falls in love and is caught in a love triangle involving his dispute with the unpredictable and violent Parfion Rogójin for the love of the mysterious Nastasya Filipovna, a concubine to a rich russian aristocrat and a nasty person about to be wed due to the huge dowry put on her by said aristocrat who wants to get rid of her immediately.

(Why it sucks)

There is far too much filler, resulting from a time where the author was paid for amount written. There are far too many side-characters whose plot do not truly concern Michkin, and where he is a sole observer. Most interesting things happen in flashback and are narrated in vividly detail, which suggests Dosto wanted to write those stories rather than this one.

(My changes)

Cut all the side-plots. Turn flashbacks into the actual plot. Have the third act be the second act, with the story beginning with Michkin coming to St. Petersburg, attending to Nastasya's party, following them to Moscow, narrowly escaping assassination, then insisting on Nastasya even as she chooses Parfion Rogojin, leading to the dramatic ending to the story where a maddened Rogojin kills her, then tries to kill himself, and the Prince is having a seizure near them. This reinforces the theme of the good-nature of Michkin confronted with the degenerate, self-destructive nihilistic evil of everybody else. All sideplots very much lead nowhere (such as the validity of the Prince's inheritance or his relationship to Aglaya) do not contribute to the story.

Have the story end with the execution of Rogojin, then with a lengthy reflection through the Prince's POV on the entire experience.

The Idiot is such a good idea for a book, but it is squandered in the endless ramblings of side-characters to whom the Prince must listen, only to never act on their backstories.
