Favorite New Wave / New Wave adjacent Science Fiction writers or books? If you don't know what New Wave is, it was a style and movement of SF developed in the 60s with the advent of New Worlds magazine, edited by Michael Moorcock. 'New Wave SF' is known for being a more literary and ambitious attempt at Genre SF, a reaction against the pulp magazine / Golden age SF tradition, and is often associated with Modernism and Postmodernism. Notable writers are JG Ballard, Brian Aldiss, Philip K Dick (kind of), Harlan Ellison, Ursula K Le Guin, Samuel Delany, Roger Zelanzy, Stanislaw Lem, and so on...
bump for effort and trying to have good discussion. unfortunately i dont read this genre so cant contribute
>>25111550Zelazny by a significant margin. Amber, Creatures of Light and Darkness, Lord of Light. I even have 5 books of his novella and short stories.
>>25111550>Moor>CockWhy are anglos like this?
I know its his most popular book, but I finished it recently and I loved it, its now a favorite of mine. It might be kind of a stretch but since the female androids (as well as Deckard's Wife) in the novel are demonstrated as sociopathic and unempathetic, more or less, I think this might be some projection of PKD's views of women at this point in his career, especially since he was divorced four times. But then again he went schizophrenic, so I'm not sure about anything when I read his books.
>>25111550Lem (sci-fi part of his works) is not actually sci-fi, but a satire about society and people first and foremost, only masquerading as sci-fi. Pretty good, though.Zelazny is the king, but not fully sci-fi. In addition to >>25111592 i'd like to recommend Azzy trilogy.Le Guin is kinda moody, has its moments, but is all about mental trauma and attempts to overcome it while also being guilt-ridden.
>>25111550I liked some of the Amber books, although it's been more than a decade since I have read them.Myth series by Robert Asprin would fit too?Black Company books? Or is that New New Wave?
>>25111779Science Fiction/SF, is not the same as 'Sci-Fi'. Science Fiction is a genre of speculative fiction, the other genre being fantasy. The difference between SF and fantasy is that SF is assumed to be scientifically explicable, whereas fantasy involves magic or the supernatural. Speculative fiction is just any fiction that doesn't take place in the ordinary world, and this includes Alt History and Dystopian fiction (1984, Brave New World). Sci-fi is associated with more pop-culture and commercial SF popularized by the magazine tradition in the 30s/40s, Star Trek, Star Wars, etc. SF is about society and people. Lem and Zelazny are definitely SF
>>25111597>Why are Anglos the inventors of English?Back in the day people just had their first names, but the taxman needed all the different Johns, Michaels and Richards distinguished with sir names. They threw em some names like Smith or Farmer because that was their profession. This lads family kept chickens and lived by the moors.
>>25111550Ballard was alright. Rest were kind of slopsters.
>>25112386Moorcock can write well when he wants.
Any recs for Zelazny?>>25112386I like him too and I will read more Ballard in the future
>>25112939Amber
>>25112939His short storiesLord of LightThis ImmortalThe Dream Master
>>25111550Is Gene Wolfe New Wave?
>>25111550This is quite literally my favorite genre writing out there. New Wave is awesome.Of these my favorite by a wide margin is Ellison and it's a fucking travesty (as addressed elsewhere on this board) that he's being pigeon holed as the 'I Have no Mouth' guy.He quite literally has a story for almost every taste. The only thing he really struggled with was female POVs but he also fully admitted to being weak at that.>>25111633PKD is also, obviously, incredible.>>25111779Lem is awesome. Le Guin is very energetic but less consistent than the others. Still good though.
>>25111633>I think this might be some projection of PKD's views of women at this point in his careerProjection of his views or simply wisdom?
>>25114198Much funnier to speculate on considering modern gender dynamics versus those when PKD was writing.
