Antonio Lobo Antunes dies at 83

>>25122991
will he get a sticky like dan "mr israel" simmons did?
>>
basado
He's one of those authors I keep meaning to read some day. But there's way too much "latter half of the 20th century /lit/ slop" to trudge through
>>
>>25122991
thats a pretty cool looking room
>>
Recommend me a work by him that's among his best. I'm totally unfamiliar with the guy and between books right now, so I'm open for something. Ideally not 800 pages, but hey.

Fado Alexandrino is a masterpiece
>>
>>25122991
Damn, RIP. Great writer. If any /lit/tards haven't read him, now's a good time
>>25123091
The Land at the End of the World, IMO

Was going to say this >>25123119
The way he can interweave the 3 different narrative timelines in single sentence accompanied by rich and colourful metaphors is awe inspiring. Adding to it, the nuance of thought and personality of each of the 4 characters in the prose, each character being relayed in their respective pov, you get pretty raw, organic and truthful representation of the portuguese war veteran and of the society they lived in.
The dinner these 4 characters are having with the capitan in the present of 1982 serves as channel for each of them to remember their coming from Mozambique in 1972 back to Lisbon and the years that followed up to the dinner they're having

I could go on and on about this book as it is one of my favorite modern portuguese novels.
A strong recommendation for those that are not only interested in the fall of the portuguese empire and the aftermath of the revolution but also to those that love brilliantly written prose

Can I please get more Portuguese novels recommendations?
>>

fucking hell.

one of the best to ever do it. some of his novels could feel a tad formulaic at times, but i'll be damned if most authors could even dream of achieving his heights. he was better than Faulkner and i'll fight any mutt who disagrees.

i'm fucking sad. like unironically. i remmeber what joy it was to discover him.

he could be convoluted, but his work always touched me in a deeply personal way. for the longest time he was my go to at the time of recommending living authors.

maybe one of the best writers of Power that i can recall atm.

bloody hell, he'll be missed.

also, fuck you jannies for not stickying this. he deserved it more than all.

rip, master.

RIP. He was one of the best Portuguese writers.

Let's address the elephant in the room: he deserved the Nobel. Obviously, they did not give him the Nobel because they had already given to Saramago, and they couldn't give two Nobels to an irrelevant country in one generation. Saramago was too a great writer, but I'll say Lobo Antunes deserved more. If I could only pick one, I would pick Lobo Antunes.
We also know one of the main reasons Saramago was chosen instead of Lobo Antunes: he was an orthodox communist, and that gave him points. I am not judging their personalities, they both seemed to be pieces of shit (Saramago defended massacres and censorship, and Lobo Antunes seemed to be a bit of a cunt), but they were both great writers who deserved more recognition. Portugal does not have much to be proud about, but it does have good writers.

One job, anon

>>25124299
Curiously, the first book written by Lobo Antunes is titled Memória de Elefante, which translates to Elephant's Memory

Glad you’re not, like, ironically sad, like
>>
>>25124801
Yes, and Saramago has a book called Journey of the Elephant, that was the joke.
