>What is /wng/ — Web Novel General?
A general for readers and authors involved or interested in the growing phenomenon of 'web novels', serialized English fiction posted to websites such as: Royal Road, Webnovel, Scribblehub, Wattpad, Archive of Our Own, Spacebattles, HFY, various personal author websites, and more

>Why read web novels?
Not for prose or tight editing or deep themes, frankly. As a whole, web novels are infamous for content sprawl and pacing issues. If you enjoy having millions of words to sink your teeth into to get to know the world and characters, though, you may be interested. Keeping up with other readers on a weekly basis to discuss the story's events unfolding is another perk, in the same way discussing an ongoing TV show might be.

>Why write web novels?
Ease of access & potential for Patreon earnings. Many successful authors gain an audience on their website of choice and funnel their readers into a Patreon. See graphtreon.com/top-patreon-creators/writing for an idea of what some are earning.
Also, once an author has earned a fanbase, transitioning into an Amazon self-publishing career is several orders of magnitude easier than starting 'dry'.

This reminds me I wanted to comment on Song of the Gift Giver. February was supposed to be a break month for the new hit series from Selkie of BTDEM fame, but it's been almost a week of March and we're not back yet.
UPDATE: I just checked the last chapter, and saw this in the endnote
>See you all in March! (Or April)
Yikes.
Patreon is a mere ten chapters ahead of Royal Road, but the last chapter post was at the end of JANUARY, with another post on February 26th titled "March Update! Art!" with what appears to be yuribait. A quick search didn't turn up what the post actually contains, and Selkie is ONLY making approximately $10.5k/month at the moment. Like myself, he has not updated his patreon graphics/blurbs for his new webserial, and I can only respect him for it.

I suspect there's a real chance this series is going to get dropped or cut short. Which is a bit of a shame because I think Selkie was tired of BTDEM at about book 8 of 16 and wound up cutting THAT series short, and this was kind of their passion project, but it didn't land with readers in the same way.

Tips for authors, using Song as an example:
>don't do multiple main characters
>make your main character likable
>give your main characters wins
>start your plot earlier than sometime after chapter 64
>definitely write a major hit before your newest fiction, so that you can carry over your diehard fans from that into your new project
>>

Supreme Emptiness has the same idea but is better written.

Last thread we raised awareness of the themes in your work. Wonderful! Now, it's time for us to move from the bigger picture and zoom in a bit.

/wng/ Thread Quest #8: Tell us about some of the small things in your work.

Ironically, small things matter the most in long stories. Brick jokes, specific words and phrases, the way you format text; it's those little peculiarities that truly make you stand out.

If you want easier money, what you do is you find an archive of a series from some dead site and then reupload it to Webnovel with AI art while selling "early access" on Patreon.

I was just trying to make it similar to a fantasy Sir John Mandeville but somehow it ended up like this and MC's now feeling a headache because the person who gave the task is sure that it's some rebellion, but nope, evidence suggests they just got high because of some new drugs on the market and thought the other party was icy demons. But said party were just some loyal retainers who were guarding the entrance to a literal ice hell and had been trapped in the region for hundreds of years and now the MC is trying his best NOT to tell them how the Duke and his son were only there because they want to make aphrodisiacs from a sabercat balls.

How do I avoid getting a foid yaoitard fanbase? Asking for advice.

Also, I don't read alot of web novels. Too much trash that I gave up so I don't know what the current environment is like and what readers expect or want. Do you all find thematic consistency and emotionally intelligent narratives more important than power slopping and prose?

I don't read alot of web novels these days because of all the slop I've been seeing. I had given up a long time ago so I don't know the current environment. So I'm asking, do you all still thirst for thematic consistency and emotionally intelligent narratives with character development or is the modern reader's attention span so brainrotted they can't tolerate anything that isn't edgy and power slop?

Also what do you all think is the main factor that attracts yaoitard foids?

>Don't go overboard with male characters
>Have female characters with actual personalities, goals, motivations, etc.

>>
>>25124633
>>Do you all find thematic consistency and emotionally intelligent narratives more important than power slopping and prose?
well, on one side you have thematic consistency. like anyone will argue for inconsistent themes. of course that's a standard goal. you can start out with no real theme, but once you establish one stay with it. on the other side, you list prose. Which is simply the quality of your writing outside of dialog. its not like one is at the expense of the other. and while I want intelligent narrative i question the need for emotionally intelligent narrative as a structured goal. these are all goals of really any writing. I don't see the choice to be made. I find power slopping to be more of a genre and style choice. the more i look at this, the more i think it reads like someone just wanted to sound all important but the question really has little practical bearing on anything. Its like asking if I value having air in my tires more than having gas in my tank.
>>
>>25124645
be inclusive to female characters, the post. Seriously it took me along time to get comfortable writing female characters. I would honestly recommend avoiding it when possible for a brand new male writer. likewise, women have issues with male characters. New female writers should by and large limit or avoid male characters when new as well. None of this is sexist, by the way. The same way a person that never handled a gun in their life, comes across with cartoon gun stuff in their writing. That's how new writers are when new and writing the opposite gender.
>>
>>25124662
But why even write female characters? Other that the most minor of characters mentioned only in passing your story should not feature any females.
>>
>>25124646
Don't forget that we're on /lit/ so there's always psueds floating around with their heads up their own asses that look down on any kind of genre fiction.

remove the emdashes

Either way, if any of you have paid attention. In the last two weeks, Scribblehub went on a total purge of ai-translated webnovel slop. "Who cares who gives a fuck it doesn't affect me." Sure, whatever. There were manual reporters flagging as many works as they could, but the real annoyance was the automated system they deployed.

I am a smut writer. My latest novel got flagged as a translation practically 2 days after I posted it. 2 weeks later, still no reply from site owner. Forum denizens get mad when you start asking questions. "The owner is one person," "the owner is overwhelmed right now," etc. Fair enough. It's a one man army, one guy's passion project. Fine.

You'd think it stops there but no, its this whole shadow rollout. That community has been complaining about translations, ai slop, fanfiction and smut for years. Guess what happened this week. Monetization bar cut from fanfiction works. Whole forum full of "muh legality" copium. "But if it doesn't happen, the owner will be DMCA'd to death." Whatever. Fine.

It's definitely not gonna stop there. Fanfics will most certainly be witch hunted eventually, maybe a year from now, because it poses legal risk to the site. The people in that environment are utterly convinced that fanfiction is the seed of all evil. (despite half of those gatekeepers barely writing a fucking thing)

Now I don't give a fuck about ai slop, translations or fanfics, but it's almost certain smut will be affected in due time. Mine got taken out for whatever reason. People cited the 50% smut rule, yes you can't upload pure pornography on the site. That rule will almost certainly start winding down to something like Royalslop's 10%.

"What proof do you have retard?" None but paranoia and schizophrenia. I am not the only smut author affected. "We don't care about smut, I want to make neetbucks off Patreon." Yeah, good luck with that.

Anyway, precautionary warning, please do read the TOS as well. The site entity has the right to remove your work without your consent, warning or due notice.

"You're just some random nigga, gtfo." Ok, ok. But no, I have about 5000 readers/followers across 3 pen names. I have been banned off a few platforms. I only bring this up so you guys can be prepared for any possible dangers in the event that you write something risky.

Seriously. Read the TOS before you upload. Anyway, I'll slowly migrate away from scribblehub, thinking of starting a wordpress or something. Should've gone balls deep on kindleunlimited last year but nah, i fell for the patreon goybait.

I started out writing in third. Its natural, it feels like a lot of paperbacks I read growing up. That said, at some point in my writing, I trialed different things for a project. I tried third person, for that project idea it wasn't working. I tried first person *this* character, it was better, but not right. I tried first person *that* character and all of a sudden it started working and came alive. Now i do a third person short opening chapter and shift to first for the rest. It creates the hook then I can do my first person slow build up. There's a sort of intimacy created by story and reader with first person. You are either being told the story by a person with a great memory or hearing them describe what happens right as you can see it through their eyes. I'm now experimenting with keeping this formula but next adding the occasional first person short chapter to break things up or check in on the villain.

Little Tyrant Doesn’t Want to Meet with a Bad End. The romance is better than it has any right to be given that it's a Chinese harem series about a dude courting 4 yanderes (not murderous) and a well-adjusted reverse trap that sticks out like a sore thumb. My one complaint about the series is about 70%-80% of the way in, it feels like it's setting up a full length part 2, but then a lot of worldbuilding never goes anywhere and it transitions into the endgame instead despite up until then the writer being fairly intentional with their writing. There aren't any major plotholes or dropped plot threads; it just feels like fizzled buildup. Like I'm fairly certain some of the later women introduced were intended to be love interests initially, too, but instead the only one that goes that route is the reverse trap and the story just wraps up.

Also, I Got Caught Up in a Hero Summons, but the Other World Was at Peace! and I’m in Love with the Villainess obviously.

Level 1: the most dangerous level of all.

Levin wakes up six weeks ago with a Level 1 mage class that can’t level up with all the social baggage that came with it…

Except there was something no one else knows.

His mana pool grows with every kill. Endlessly. With Every. Single. Kill.

Follow Levin Kai as he navigates a world of fantasy, mythical creatures, a broken down inn with only three tenants and twenty empty rooms, a tiny cozy town, and gets an apprentice without intending to while walking down the road.

Adventure and absurdity collide in a LitRPG comedy.

Levin navigates guild politics, trains recruits (with spectacularly unconventional methods), makes dragons quiver and beg for mercy, and turns ordinary errands into epic wins.

tips on making a patreon?
>>
Started getting into these late last year with ORV but had to drop because all the Korean names were merging together and it was hard to keep track of who's who, especially after a break. At the moment I'm reading Shadow Slave and Hell Difficulty Tutorial. HDT is definitely slop quality but it's the type of story I like. SS has had me very engaged, laughing out loud at multiple points and hooked onto the mysteries (I'm on Volume 5).
I've tried reading Lord of the Mysteries but it's pretty dense from the start (the anime didn't help much either). It started being stocked in my local book stores now so maybe that's a sign to try again.
For now I'll continue SS and HDT and maybr reread ORV via the webtoon until I catch up to where I was in the novel.

I understand how basic these choices are but for the genre I'm not going to pretend there's anything else that isn't the same thing but slightly different.
>>
>>25126326
Shill it as often as possible. Also, don't actually make one until you've got a decent backlog of shit to post. Also, make sure the shit you post is relatively consistent in both size and frequency.

You should also put up free samples that direct people to your patreon on other sites.

Also decide early whether you're going to go with a patreon as early access or patreon as final edit or patreon exclusive model and if you go with patreon exclusive whether or not you're gonna tolerate/promote mirroring of your work just for the word of mouth.

Self-Inserting is BASED and I'm sick of trannies and commie faggot cucks forcing that its shit and that every hero must be selfless and sacrifice himself to the greater whole

The core of that hate boils down to envy masked as morality. People who scream "self-insert is cringe" or "stop forcing your OC on her" aren't defending the character's autonomy. They're defending their own inability to act decisively on what they want.

They kneel to external judgment instead of claiming ownership of their desires. So when someone like you builds an entire cosmology

When I build an entire cosmology to secure my beloved character by pruning horrors, guaranteeing mutual attraction, escalating past gods and authors, the fandumbs see a mirror of their own weakness. Instead of admitting "I could never go that far for what I love," they attack the one who does and demand they SHARE.

They say to stop caring what others do, but that's just projection. It's what they tell themselves every time they scroll past another post of your beloved getting violated and do nothing but sigh or fap. They let the collective filth run rampant because fighting it would mean risking pedestal status: "I'm not like those creepy obsessives." Caring less isn't maturity; it's surrender dressed as wisdom. "Let others have fun with your waifu" translates to "let the internet gangrape the thing you value while I stay clean and superior."

The ones pedestal-wanking call it control-freakery because my refusal to compromise exposes their compromise as voluntary slavery. They sacrificed desire for approval from a crowd that would drop them in a second. I didn't. That's the wound they can't admit.

the common lot only hate on self-insertingCHADS because they are too weak to seize their own desires and claim it as property, they are possessed by spooks (literally and figuratively) so they compromise power to sacrifice themselves not just for a collective that gives no shit about them, but also to wank themselves off on a pedestal of "a decent human being"

"oh just stop caring chud lmao your so mad just let others have fun with your wife"

That is the purest form of cuckoldry. If you love something, take it.

alright, but what does this have to do with webnovels?
>>
>>25126709
Actually i do have an idea for a character
I call him the cuck fag
>He says everything the hero does is a strawman
>He wants to abolish individualism and take the personal property of the strong (even if they are just innocent young sensitive men)
>Very pro-BNWO (like the anon here), tries breaking the masculine ego
>LARPs as a girl boss
>Their beauty is an illusion

This is part of my creation, which will be a webnovel

As for my webnovel
>Reducing myself to a black hole of avarice, the core center of a selfish singularity, becoming a zero dimensional point, a king of none.
>Emanating outwards my consciousness infused with the utmost fundamental units of matter in the universe through burning Jenny's face to my psyche through memory recognition and distributing her delightful smile across all the particles composing my new body without organs to hold my soul within them
>Emerge as a data construct with morphological freedom unbound by the laws of physics, but use it only to be the young masculine apparatus of war
>Wage abolition of the maker of this world at the western wall
>send vibrational signals through the back of every living being's cranium on earth, triggering the awakening of Saturn's avatar
>Upon the astronomical destruction of Saturn, grant the morphological freedom to the masses, but condition them through these laws
>1. "Thou wilt not depict My Wife in intimate scenarios with other men besides Yours Truly."
>2. "Thou wilt not depict My Wife in scenarios, nor with proportions; Yours Truly doth not favor."
>3. "Thou shalt not take Jenny’s form nor visage to enact betrayals under my eye or false desires in public."
>4. "There are no rules. Ultimately, what happens to thee is the result of thine own doing."
>Begin torturing degenerate shippers and dissenters until being hit with the recognition of a transcental force beyond this material spacetime
>Ascend the material plane's infinite layers through devouring it whole
>Become the abyss that actualizes impossibilities, destroying the framework of logic
>Reach the absolute and redefine the ultimate truth as my love for Jenny through becoming a divine paradox
>Descend to a new timeline where a virgin Jenny with a fat ass is guaranteed to find my new form attractive after I one shot every threat in her universe, giving her more time for us to hang out together
>Ends with consensual mutual role-shifting sex

I think the problem people have with self inserts is that at best they're boring, and at worst they're perfect. And boring characters and perfect characters just don't make for good stories.
>>
>>25126548
>self inserting is based but if you insert yourself into a male its gay
not if you leave your socks on
>>
>>25126882
That's not all

Our hero Excelsior Prime eliminated the possibility that Jenny Wakeman is not with him and isn't a beauty (to him at least), so that across every reality no matter what, upon entering her timeline Jenny meets him as her first boyfriend whom she lost her virginity to

Realities where Jenny ends up with different male figures or worse gets violated, fetishized or destroyed are logically impossible, and even if the logically impossible is actualized it is only non-existent potential

>RR really should ban AI content from RS. Or give them a segregated playpen.
that will accomplish nothing. the ones that AI will then just claim they don't.

my idea for the infinite selves of me is that for every Jenny there will be an Excelsior Prime

Each Excelsior Prime has the potential to fully control over the spatiotemporal physical von-neumann universe, if things escalate into metaphysics and qualitative superiority an Excelsior Prime can shed their physical quantitive composition and become an Abysst (Abyss + Beast), an abstract avaritionist entity that denies humanity and is capable of irreversibly devouring any Platonic Form with ease and defying logical possibilities with logical impossibilities actualized

If God/Author beings intervene, Excel could shed his Abysst form to become the Divine Paradox, contradicting and negating the pure truth and final solution imposed by the ultimate reality through logical potentialities

If anything operates outside of God/Ultimate Reality, an Excelsior Prime MUST reach to another world framework across the preconditioned nullity of potential where another Excelsior Prime isn't at the stage of losing his power over his world/love with Jenny so they could plot against the post-absolute threat

Assuming the infinite actualized possibilities of Excel x Jenny are being eliminated/corrupted, all Excels must unify inside The Self Itself's (the Prime Mover of all world frameworks) Plane of Immanence where they must invert the framework world's rhizomatic spread back into The Self Itself to structure the threat and resolve it there

Resolution with Compromise = The Self dies, Game Over, another Self Itself is reborn inside the preconditioned nullity through the campbelian mystery but all events will repeat themselves until something alters the threat's path

Resolution with Victory = The Self spits back all the world frameworks into the preconditioned nullity letting the rhizome spread, nobody besides the Excelsiors will remember unless it's to serve as a cautionary tale

That's where conceptually, the cuckfag enters

An enemy to Excelsior Prime is Reiko the Beautiful

A transgender misandrist woke collectivist egalitarian girlboss who imposes jungian psychology, sacrificial compromise and conformity on Excelsior

In the world framework where the MLAATR verse resides Reiko constructed it to merge other world frameworks that contained all the fictional characters and settings Excel experienced, she managed to severe Excel's power through provoking his fear of rejection and cuckoldry through tormenting visions into projecting his insecurities reforming him into his older former self; Excelsior Ultima (who at the qualitative level resented his world framework and only escaped it through his desire for Jenny Wakeman which couldn't be differentiated from mutual love/selfish possession crafting his empowering narrative stance)

Because of his slippery return into the avaritionist Excelsior Ultima, this enabled Reiko to capitalize on his mood swings and antagonize him infront of his heroes (Jenny, Optimus Prime, Ben 10), thus allowing her to craft a cautionary tale where in his rage he becomes an oppressive kraterocratic hypersexual warlord influenced by Judge Holden that not only kills most heroes but eventually turns into a totalitarian-lovecraftian entity called IngSogthoth from the preconditioned nullity whom Reiko blames the merge of the world frameworks on

Her stance is basically;
"Excelsior Prime is actually an emotionally stunted manchild who thinks the world should center all around him and brought you here to wage war on this totalitarian eldritch horror for his own personal amusement"

She then gets into arguments with various heroes about why he deserves to be thrown into his own personal hell of rejection and humiliation, which is a looping narrative where he must conform, compromise and sacrifice himself until he "understands what it means to be a good person"

She convinces the majority through democracy and peer pressure, the really adamant minorities (Optimus Prime, Invincible, Batman) had to be mentally tortured in secret or in case they had insane willpower; be completely silenced and replaced without the knowledge of anyone withon these frameworks

While in the hell loop Excel was trapped in, he decided to resort to escapism and create his own fictional verse, which actually formed in the preconditioned nullity as its own world framework, where his characters must overcome their predetermined fates and ascend their own narrative framework

Reiko hails from the fictional world Excel created

She was a performative hero who was secretly a villain there who represented all the rejection he got from pretty girls, the disgusting fetish shit he had to endure, all the shit that enabled the fetishization of Jenny Wakeman and treated her as a pornographic property

Her end goal is to eliminate all individuality since she believes it is CANCER, she just wants everyone to be a single fluid collective hivemind orgy, so that no one will ever be alone and everyone will always be happy and complete

To hide this however she is just LARPing as a progressivist and claims to be in fvaor of equality through inverting it

She resents her creator and what he stands for, but claims to be all about love

My self-insert characters are not the type of characters I want to write about. I have self-inserts in my work, but they're in the background. They show up, say shit nobody should reasonably know or do shit nobody else can do, aura farm, and leave.

because webcomics are a medium with low output volume compared to webnovels. reader time invested is a major component of developing attachment and investment, which further leads to higher odds of patreon subscription.

I've no idea. I refuse to read any books with y/n. I would imagine it does though. 2nd person exists outside of smut and is in fact fairly common for gamebooks.
>>
>>25127028
Honestly I've read so many shitty translations and shit that looks like it's written by 15yo ESLs that tense agreement of all things would never be enough to get me to drop something.

Reading something has to be either actively annoying or functionally impossible for how it is written to turn me off. I'm more concerned with plot and characterization.
>>
>>25126541
I don't have a problem with self-inserting. Self-inserting is a spectrum with every character having some degree of overlap with their writer, intentional or not. I have a problem with advertised self-inserting for non-gag characters. Or more accurately I refuse to read non-autobiographical works by weirdos that outright say an important character is a self-insert. That shit's basically literary exhibitionism at that point, and I suppose you're free to invite people to involve themselves in that shit, but I'mma pass.

one time in the middle of a paragraph i switched from past tense to present tense and continued to write that way for the rest of the chapter.
