>It is impossible for an author still writing to be fair to another author working along the same lines. In fact I dislike DUNE with some intensity, and in that unfortunate case it is much the best and fairest to another author to keep silent and refuse to comment.

Ouch.

Tolkien disliked all allegories.

More than that: Tolkien was a legitimately pious Catholic, and Dune is all about how religion has no transcendent Truth to it, it's merely useful for achieving your personal goals. Of course Tolkien would hate a story like that.

Hellstrom's Hive was the true Herbert masterpiece anyway.

>It is impossible for an author still writing to be fair to another author working along the same lines.
This is absolutely true. I violently hated every other PhD thesis that was written on a vaguely similar topic to mine, and I hated the good bits even more than the bits I didn't like.

Jealousy is a stinky cologne anon.

>>25128805
At least anon is self-aware. That is enough to put him above a midwit.

I'm Christian but Dune is just better.
>>
>>25128874
What makes it better?
>>
>>25128874
It absolutely is not. I'll say more: the 1984's movie ending was better.
>>

LOTR doesn't have anything interesting to say. None of it maps onto reality so it's just the fantasizing of an old man about good (mostly) coming together to defeat evil. Who cares?

How'd a larping goodreads retard find out about 4chinz?

Tolkien was truly a gentleman.

>The New Shadow in Space

If it weren't for Herbert, we could've had the Rings follow up.
>>

>no elves
>no dwarves
>no hobbits
>no wizards
>no magic
>no cool demigods walking around

The New Shadow would have been boring and Tolkien was right not to write it.
>>
>>25128971
Yeah, if being a gentleman means being a facetious, passive-aggressive prick.
>>
>>25129127
thats exactly what it means

>has nothing important to say
>still becomes a phenomenon
This is infinitely more impressive than Dune's success. Historically, epic narratives with no clear message age way better.
