All a magic system needs to do is explain why characters can't just magic all their problems away, anything more is masturbation.

It's like when people have a supernatural experience and yet remain being materialist because they just don't like the idea, and so they draw the line in the sand that doesn't let magic experiences arise in the experience, and fix them sternly in that point, so everything get back to the usual.
