History general thread. What have you been reading and what have you to recommend–>discuss? I started this last night and it's kino of the highest order. For fans of Storm of Steel. Next history book I'm going to read after this will probably be Dancing in the Glory of Monsters. I'll finish Ghost Wars eventually.

Just finished reading Carlyle's biography on Frederick the Great. Tldr, yea it/he was pretty great. Would probably recommend something a bit more succinct if youre interested in the guy though, since Carlyle sure loves his tangents.

Probably going to tackle this one soon, its been in the back of my mind forever.
After I'm finished reading three kingdoms ofc, which a pure joy to read so far since im a huge fan of that era

The War of Wars: The Epic Struggle Between Britain and France, 1789-1815 by Robert Harvey

>At the turn of the 18th century the greatest nations in Europe offered history two distinct ideals that would shape the new century: England was a democratic, constitutional monarchy; while France had suffered the cataclysm of Revolution that ripped the absolute king from the throne and replaced him with the mob. Out of this maelstrom emerged a military leader, Napoleon Bonaparte, commander of the revolutionary army, who would conquer Italy and Egypt before returning to Paris to proclaim himself emperor. As Napoleon gained power in France, the world stood on the brink of total war. By 1805 the general was making plans to cross the channel and invade England. The subsequent drama reaches from the frozen plains surrounding Moscow to the Caribbean waters, from the debating chamber of the Parliament to the muddy fields of Waterloo. The Great French Wars (1793–1815) can truly be called the first global war; it was also the first conflict driven by industrial might. As Napoleon's revolutionary guard ravaged Europe, men like the Duke of Wellington, Horatio Nelson, as well as their allies, Duke Charles of Hapsburg and Gebhard von Blucher stopped his complete domination of the continent.

Currently reading Clausewitz’s history of Napoleon’s first Italian campaign.
I would have read it in English, but the commentary by the French artillery officer who translated my copy is incredibly insightful. Clausewitz didn’t have access to many of the correspondences and accounts that illuminate the objectives and mindset of the French generals while making decisions, so he got some things wrong.

I haven’t read anything in French in a long time, thoo, my reading skills have gotten rusty.

The Oera Linda Book.
I don't care if some people say its a hoax, there are just as many people who think its Legit based on the linguistics.
But what really convinced me was all the dates and the archeological data. Maybe the author could have got lucky and guessed a few things like the Minoan Civilization and shit, but the 4.2Kiloyear event is just way too spot on.
Sent me down a rabbit hole of reunderstanding mythology as history just subverted by negligent historians.
>>
I read this book about the six day war last year and was quite satisfied as the author was very good at diving deeply into the diplomacy and situations of both sides while also going into the details of the fighting. It's a shame he didn't write about the Kippur war. I am considering Abraham Rabinovichs' book as a follow up except if someone has a better recommendation.
>>
>>25157427
I've read part of her medieval volume (published as "The History of the Medieval World," if that's different from your picrel then disregard), its very different from standard history books in that it is basically a chronology of things happening over time. So its literally like "992 - King whatshisface takes the throne" for hundreds of pages. OFC there are themes and narratives that she chooses to focus on, and she provides context and explanations but its less obvious or openly stated. I remember one of the volumes had a great explanation for how Aztec religion justified human sacrifice as cycling energy used by humans back to the sun (which provided life for everything on earth) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonalli

>>25153806
Hobsbawm is at one end of the idealism-materialism spectrum in historiography, so he not really representative of the field as a whole vis a vis philosophy. Many historians take philosophy and idealism more seriously than him, especially older ones.

I have weird request.

Are there any English-language books about the history of the German Anti-Deutsch movement?

It was a movement that started in Germany in the 1980’s that was opposed to Germany’s reunification, thinking it would bring on a new Nazi state. Later, it would evolve into this anti-nationalist movement that was leftist but also very Pro-Zionist. It dissipated in the 2000’s but its tenets kind of spread into German center-left politics overall. It’s the type of people who say Israel is actual existing Commuism.

grew up here, shoutout West Ashley neighborhood of Charleston. the entire place (lowcountry too) was built on drained swampland. most of the lowcountry's still swamps. "Lowcountry at High Tide: A History of Flooding, Drainage, and Reclamation in Charleston, South Carolina" by Butler's probably the best on this. Civil War-wise, Brennan's "Secessionville: Assault on Charleston" is where I'd start, followed by Wise's "Gate of Hell: The Campaign for Charleston, 1863." If you want something more memoiry, then Pat Conroy's "The Water is Wide" is where I'd go, memoir of his time teaching on the Barrier Islands. (Can't talk about SC/Lowcountry literature without mentioning Pat Conroy, every Lowcountry household has at least one Conroy book in hardcover. Throw in his novel "The Lords of Discipline" for a look at the Citadel.)

I'm reading "An Unfinished History of the World" by Hugh Thomas. I hope it will give me a solid foundation from which I can learn about other topics like economics or modern politics.
I've just finished the first part which goes upto 2000BC.
I'm surprised how advanced the Iraqis were in the Bronze Age. They had basic systems of law to keep societal cohesion, private commerce, decent maths etc. I didn't think that writing would come about first due to commerce, and that writing would be unimpressive, but I guess I can see how in a small town with low specialisation, you always had the option of just doing the exchange in person or via a messenger.
I wonder how expressive Sumerian is.
Also, I didn't expect that most of humanity were still semi-nomadic by the industrial revolution, practicing a slash-burn agriculture where you burn forest for agricultural land that you use for 8 years or so before moving on.

It's a strange one.

On the one hand, there are bizarre overlaps with real events that seem excessive if it was just a kooky LARP, but then there's what seem like obvious anachronisms in the language and a proto-liberal/proto-feminist 19th century political agenda.

The realist in me says a well-made fabrication (that still has merit in spite of that being the case), but the schizo in me says it contains genuine layer of truth interspersed with later insertions.
